The New Orleans Pelicans have suspended star forward Zion Williamson for one game following a violation of team policies. Williamson will miss the upcoming Friday night matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers. The suspension comes after Williamson was late for the team's flight to Philadelphia, breaching team standards as confirmed by the Pelicans' executive vice president of basketball operations, David Griffin.
Williamson recently returned to action on Tuesday night after missing 27 games due to a left hamstring strain. In his return, he scored 22 points in just under 28 minutes during a 104-97 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Despite his strong comeback, Williamson's tardiness for Thursday's flight prompted the team to enforce disciplinary measures.
"I take full responsibility for this suspension," said Zion Williamson.
Williamson addressed his actions by acknowledging his lateness to "team activities" and took full accountability. He extended apologies to Pelicans' owner Mrs. Gayle Benson, teammates, coaches, and fans, emphasizing his commitment to improving as a teammate and representative of the organization.
"I've worked extremely hard in rehab to get healthy to deliver for this team. There is no excuse for being late to team activities. I have apologized to [Pelicans owner] Mrs. [Gayle] Benson and my teammates and coaches and I also owe an apology to the fans. I can and will be better as a teammate and member of this organization," Williamson stated.
The Pelicans have made it clear that adherence to team policies is essential, and Williamson's suspension underscores this commitment. The team's traveling party experienced a delay while they waited for Williamson to arrive, which prompted the disciplinary action.
Following the suspension, Williamson is expected to rejoin the Pelicans on Saturday as they prepare for a Sunday game against the Boston Celtics in Boston. His recent return after an extended injury absence had been a positive development for the Pelicans, who are counting on his contributions as they continue their season.
