Today, Zimbabwe’s cricket team scored their biggest ever victory. Further success was to follow as they celebrated their first Test match victory in four years with a three wicket success against Bangladesh in Sylhet. This victory is a big achievement for the team. Their most recent celebration of a Test victory came over Afghanistan nearly two years ago in March 2021.
The game ended with Zimbabwe pulling off an incredible comeback to chase down a target of 174 runs. Opener’s Brian Bennett and Ben Curran provided a great foundation for their innings. Their groundwork during the chase made it a sure thing. Wesley Madhevere finished the match in style with a four, sparking joyous scenes from the Zimbabwean players and fans.
Blessing Muzarabani emerged as the game-changer for Zimbabwe, claiming six wickets for 72 runs. His extraordinary bowling had already delivered him the Player of the Match award. This achievement underscored the importance of his role in finally delivering this long-sought win. On the other side, Mehidy Hasan dazzled for Bangladesh, claiming five wickets for only 50 runs. He finished the game with magnificent match figures of 10/102.
This victory marks the end of a 26-match winless streak for Zimbabwe in Test match cricket. Besides that, it provides them a 1-0 lead in the two-match series against Bangladesh. Zimbabwe has not enjoyed a series victory since August 2011. They defeated Bangladesh in a single Test match. Their last series victory in a multi-match series was in 2004, also against Bangladesh.
Zimbabwe is on their way to an electrifying historic tour to England! They’ll face off in a one-off, 4-day Test match at Trent Bridge beginning May 22. This tour marks Zimbabwe’s first visit to England for Test matches since 2003, adding to the significance of their recent victory.
