Zach Ertz Eyes Future in Football as Free Agency Looms

Zach Ertz
, a standout tight end for the Washington Commanders, has expressed his desire to continue his football career despite reaching the age of 40. After a rejuvenating season with the Commanders, Ertz is set to become a free agent when the new league year kicks off in March. His performance during the 2022-2023 season has reignited his passion for the game, following two injury-plagued seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. Ertz’s contributions were evident as he helped propel the Commanders to a 12-5 regular-season record, drawing on mentorship from seasoned veterans like linebacker Bobby Wagner.

Ertz's time in Washington proved to be his most productive since 2018. He finished the season with 66 catches for 654 yards and seven touchdowns. Notably, he ranked third among tight ends with 13 red-zone catches and tied for third with three touchdowns in the red zone. His impressive season culminated in a personal best during Washington's NFC Championship Game against Philadelphia, where he posted season highs in catches and yards, despite the team's 55-23 loss.

Ertz attributes part of his success to playing alongside quarterback Jayden Daniels, describing the experience as "extremely fun." He found a renewed sense of freedom and support within the Commanders’ environment, largely due to his relationship with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. Ertz had signed a one-year deal with Washington last offseason, largely influenced by Kingsbury's presence and coaching style.

"This year I felt free to go out there and be myself. Every day people built me up in a way that believed in me, that had confidence in me. Obviously playing with Jayden [Daniels] was extremely fun. I feel we're just scratching the surface of a quarterback-tight end combination. I don't know what the future holds, but I still want to play football this year." – Ertz

Despite his age, Ertz believes he has maintained a level of play akin to his younger years. His time on injured reserve with Arizona had previously cast doubt on his capabilities, but this season he has proven otherwise.

"I don't want to say I proved I was the same player, but I kind of did," – Ertz

As he approaches free agency, Ertz remains open-minded about his future. While he thoroughly enjoyed his season with Washington, there is no definitive plan set in stone. His strong rapport with Kliff Kingsbury could influence his decision, but ultimately, Ertz emphasizes his continued commitment to playing football.
