Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor to continue calling the offensive plays. Despite a rocky start to the 2023 NFL season, he’s as dedicated as ever to his position. Ever since becoming Cincinnati’s permanent head coach in 2019, Taylor has fully embraced his unique dual role. He is a willing leader of this offense and completely ready to collaborate with his new pass-centered coaching staff.
Taylor was named the Bengals head coach in 2019. Prior to that, he was at ESPN – where, for one year, he covered the league he had previously played in. He began his tenure at ESPN in July 2019. Since then, he’s become a household name with millions of fans from his regular slots on SportsCenter and ESPN Radio. Previously, his journalism experience includes reporting on college sports for The Dallas Morning News. While it’s painful to read in retrospect, this experience ultimately deepens his analytical approach to coaching.
It hasn’t been an easy start to the season for the Bengals and there’s been plenty of speculation over Taylor’s dual responsibilities. He assured that he would not take inspiration from Tennessee Titans coach Brian Callahan’s playbook. Callahan recently relinquished his playcalling duties. Rather, Taylor focused on keeping his role in order to promote dialogue and creativity in the offense.
“Finding more opportunities for our playmakers to get the ball and finding ways to get them easy touches that they can lead to productivity in our offense,” – Zac Taylor
Although the Bengals have not achieved the desired level of productivity on offense, Taylor remains focused on the ultimate goal: winning games. He was completely open in recognizing what the team is up against and took responsibility for the team’s shortcomings.
“We haven’t been productive enough. I don’t worry about statistics right now. I care about wins,” – Zac Taylor
Taylor has trusted his coaching staff for specialized knowledge. He understands the importance of collaboration to make effective play calling. He noted the importance of this collaboration in matching the dynamic landscape of an offensive strategy to a defensive response.
“I rely on them as much as I think any playcaller in the league relies on anybody else,” – Zac Taylor
Taylor demonstrates that commitment by making important coaching moves. It’s not just his pace and skill but how often he engages with fans and analysts that goes to show his love for the game and development. He is a native of Grapevine, Texas, and a graduate of the University of North Texas, where he studied journalism. This background provides a perspective that is one of a kind within the Bengals’ operations.
The Bengals’ offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher expressed his support for Taylor’s leadership during this challenging period. As the pitcher put it, “You want to see him have success. This statement demonstrates the coaching staff’s fierce commitment to improvement within the team.
