Yorkshire’s Thompson Shines Amidst Collapse Against Somerset

Yorkshire faced a challenging match against Somerset, ultimately ending the game at 134 for 9, but Jordan Thompson’s performance stood out as a highlight. The former Nottinghamshire and England Under-19s all-rounder struck 57 in a dominant performance, his second half-century in the 2025 Championship. In championship fashion, Thompson fell to the floor and punctuated his victory with post-fight aggression.

Thompson’s innings began with immediate attacking play. He was 36 off 18 balls and got to his half-century off only 42 balls. He cleared long-on twice for six off Somerset bowler Archie Vaughan and clipped eight boundaries in building his score. His rambunctious style on the pitch even gained him the title of a “belligerent” player, constantly going to war against the other team.

Thompson made extremly valuable contribution. Along with his notable ninth-wicket partnership, Thompson sewed up an inhtimportant eighth-wicket stand of 68 runs with Adam Lyth. This partnership would go on to be crucial in steadying the ship for Yorkshire, who had suffered a top-order collapse earlier in the game. Thompson had produced a real contest, but his innings of 89 was brought to an end when he was lbw to Josh Davey. At that time, the team score was 128.

While Yorkshire collapsed at times, Thompson constantly stood out as a spark of positivity during the team’s tumultuous campaign. He showed flashes of support for Lyth and didn’t lose his attacking intent, underlining his increasing development as more than just a reductionist’s batter.

The game was played under difficult circumstances, but both teams refused to back down. Of Gregory’s character, Somerset coach Jason Kerr said he was desperate to play despite his wrist being effectively shattered. Gregory’s impact was rewarded as he took key wickets to help seal the Test match win.

“It says a lot about Lewis Gregory’s character that he wanted to play in this game despite having a seriously damaged wrist and I am delighted that he was rewarded with some wickets today.” – Jason Kerr

With both teams now preparing for second round matches, Kerr isn’t worried about his squad’s spirit. They are looking forward to finals day in the Vitality Blast and their last home Championship game on Monday.
