Yorkshire trounced Durham in their last match, beating them by an innings and 43 runs at Headingley. This result all but confirmed Durham’s relegation to Division Two for the following season. This game would serve as the catalyst for each team’s new direction. Yorkshire made sure of seventh place, and Durham’s Champions’ disappointment was compounded as they were relegated to the second Division along with Worcestershire.
The epic battle played out in nail-biting fashion over four days, with the finale being Durham not holding up against Yorkshire’s fierce bowling repertoire. Yorkshire rode on the back of some magnificent batting to rattle up 475 runs in their first innings. Durham produced a spectacular attack of 346 runs. Ben Raine was the star for Durham, making a superb 101 runs and becoming the fifth man in Durham’s first-class history to make a century and take a five-wicket haul in the same match.
By the end of the fourth day, Durham had begun their second innings with the threat of having to force a draw hanging over them. Unfortunately, they collapsed for just 85 runs, unable to bat out the final two-and-a-half sessions required to secure a draw. Yorkshire’s George Hill and Dom Bess were pivotal in this collapse, with Hill taking 4 wickets for just 14 runs and Bess claiming 4 wickets for 22 runs. Their updated performances highlighted Yorkshire’s control of the match.
Yorkshire began the final day at 465 for 9. Batting with aggression, they overtook that score to make 475 all out, emphasising their incredible depth in batting talent. Ben Raine has never been better to start the opening innings. He took a five-wicket haul, with best innings bowling of 5 for 76. This extraordinary achievement brought to the fore his unique talent as an all-rounder bowler-batsman.
Yorkshire’s head coach, Anthony McGrath, reflected on the match and its significance:
“We knew this morning that there were still a few permutations that could happen with the Hampshire game still going on. But our focus was to bat for as long as we could this morning and try and bowl Durham out.” – Anthony McGrath
Durham’s head coach, Ryan Campbell, was understandably disappointed in the wake of the loss.
“I can’t explain it. It’s just a total capitulation. Unfortunately, it’s happened a few times this year. The pressure went on and our blokes couldn’t stop it.” – Ryan Campbell
The loss was Durham’s sixth of the season, confirming their place in the relegation battle. Yorkshire rejoiced in their triumphant achievement and looked forward with eager hope to the opening of another campaign. By comparison, Durham faced the daunting challenge of reuniting and rebuilding after a failed campaign.
Durham’s lackluster performance sometimes made the alarm bells ring and this match only highlighted the cracks in their armor. Ben Raine produced several match winning innings with the bat and ball. Despite the team’s collective effort, they just came up short when it mattered most.
Yorkshire then produced a dominant overall victory to earn themselves crucial bonus-point winning points. This win allowed them to end their season on a positive note. George Hill had a strong end to the season, claiming an impressive haul of 51 Championship wickets. On the other hand, Ben Raine’s excellent all-round display served to emphasise his value to the Durham side.
