Yorkshire’s women’s cricket team produced an exhilarating performance in the Women’s One-Day Cup final. They played a terrific tournament match, decisively defeating Glamorgan at the famed venue on Saturday. The team blasted past a goal of 128 runs scored. They beat an above par total of 129 at a canter, only losing two wickets in the process. This game was a great showcase of Yorkshire’s batting depth and the phenomenal bowling display showcased by Olivia Thomas.
Olivia Thomas, a leg-spinner for Yorkshire, inspired her side with an extraordinary performance. She ended up taking three wickets and only allowed 14 runs! Her outstanding bowling brought the dismissals of Abi Freeborn and Bethan Gammon. Both players had a vital role within Glamorgan’s batting plan. As a result, Thomas’s performance reaffirmed her pro contract and made her the first player to prove capable of a starring role for the team.
In her post-match reflection, Thomas said she was proud of her performance in the difficult weather conditions.
“I’m absolutely buzzing, it’s wet and cold and not ideal for leg-spinning, but I tried to keep the ball dry, bowl full and straight and keep the stumps in play and it worked.” – Olivia Thomas
Glamorgan had a hot start to their innings, with Lauren Parfitt hitting 29 off 21 deliveries. Parfitt’s 37 off 28 balls with five fours helped Glamorgan get on the front foot early. Yet their momentum was tough to cling on to as they countered a menacing Yorkshire bowling unit.
Abi Freeborn played an important supporting role to enterprising Glamorgan skipper Hennessey, hitting 41 off just 50 balls. However, Glamorgan managed 127 for 5 in their innings despite their efforts. They were sad, thinking they had lost a perfect bullseye.
Lauren Parfitt expressed her disappointment about the team’s death batting at the crease.
“It was really difficult, we thought we were just short of where we needed to be with the bat, then they came out and batted really well so credit to them.” – Lauren Parfitt
Yorkshire’s response was swift and effective. Erin Thomas stepped up to become the engine of the chase. Due to his injunction, high scoring 62 not out, furnishing three mammoth sixes en route. Her collaboration with Winfield-Hill was instrumental. Between them, they scored 62 runs in a partnership that saw Yorkshire home, with plenty of their wickets remaining.
The last match has a great reminder of Yorkshire’s amazing depth in women’s cricket. Of course, it shows the great depth of talent on their team. With players like Olivia Thomas rising to the occasion in big verses, they look ready to build on this success in upcoming tournaments.
