Xander Schauffele made a notable return to the PGA Tour, taking his first swing on a PGA Tour course in 57 days. This marked his return after a peculiar injury sidelined him for two months. Schauffele's first swing landed precisely in the middle of the fairway, maintaining his impressive streak of active tournaments on the PGA Tour at 57 in a row. Despite this accomplishment, Schauffele has set modest expectations for the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, where he joins top players Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.
The injury that kept Schauffele away from the course was an unusual one. While attempting to cut ravioli with a wine glass, he inadvertently punctured his right palm. This incident forced him to miss two tournaments at Torrey Pines in his hometown of San Diego. Commenting on his return, Schauffele candidly remarked:
"I wouldn't call it like the dream place to come back to, to be completely honest," – Xander Schauffele
In preparation for his return, Schauffele spent time at his South Florida home. He played nine holes on a par-3 course with fellow golfer Justin Thomas and also played 18 holes on his own before heading to Bay Hill. His previous experiences at Bay Hill have been challenging, with only one round in the 60s in three past visits.
Schauffele's cautious approach to the tournament is understandable. He played nine holes using only his irons in San Diego as part of his recovery strategy. Despite these challenges, he managed two top ten finishes in his three starts since returning from injury.
Reflecting on the difficulties of coming back from an injury, Schauffele noted:
"I would be lying if I said I was in the most comfortable position ever," – Xander Schauffele
He also drew inspiration from other players who have successfully returned from injuries:
"I think Scottie came back and he wasn't close to winning, but played pretty decent and put himself back in the mix, so I don't see why I can't do that." – Xander Schauffele
Scottie Scheffler, who is also competing at Bay Hill, acknowledged the challenges of returning from an injury:
"I think it's challenging any time you're coming off an injury," – Scottie Scheffler
Despite the hurdles, 2024 was a breakthrough year for Schauffele. He triumphed in two majors, the PGA Championship and the British Open, catapulting him from having no major wins to being halfway to a career Grand Slam.
For the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, Schauffele remains realistic about his prospects. He knows well the challenges that Bay Hill presents:
"Everyone knows what Bay Hill gives you — it takes a lot more than it gives — and you have to earn every par or birdie or bogey that you make. It's a tough place." – Xander Schauffele
As he navigates his comeback, Schauffele has relied on numerous scans to ensure he does not reinjure his ribs. The meticulous precautions reflect his commitment to regaining full fitness and competitive form.
