Wyndham Clark, the reigning U.S. Open champion, expressed deep regret after damaging a century-old locker at Oakmont Country Club during this year’s championship. Clark faces the wrath once more. He previously stirred controversy for vandalizing a sign at this year’s PGA Championship.
Clark’s moves at Oakmont have alarmed preservationists and other observers. This incident is especially troubling considering it comes just weeks after his explosive tirade at the PGA Championship, in which he admitted to making a similar lapse in judgment. Looking back on his actions, Clark admitted that in order to grow, he needed to better himself.
“I made a mistake that I deeply regret. I’m very sorry for what happened,” Clark stated in a recent social media post. Next, he urged everyone to hold each other accountable while fostering professionalism.
“As professionals, we are expected to remain professional even when frustrated and I unfortunately let my emotions get the best of me. My actions were uncalled for and completely inappropriate, making it clear that I have things I need to work on,” Clark said.
Despite these disappointments, Clark still has his mind set on his future tournaments. He still has one feature signature event, the Travelers Championship, and one big tournament, the British Open, left on his schedule. Most recently, Clark debuted at the Travelers Championship with an impressive first-round score of 64. This performance underscored that he is still a very dangerous challenger in competition.
At Clark’s current pace, he would finish the year No. 80 in the FedEx Cup standings and No. 27 in the world rankings. Over the last nine months, he’s recorded an average of only one top-10 finish. This is a far cry from his breakthrough earlier this year, when he dominated the tour and won two titles, including his first major championship, the U.S. Open.
Clark already scored some serious Ryder Cup cred by making his debut on the team in 2023. As of this writing, he is 23rd in the Ryder Cup standings. As he nears the end of his first year, he’s met with successes and challenges. He fearlessly plays through the pressures of elite competition.
