WSL Updates: Liverpool Struggles Continue as West Ham Faces Longest Losing Streak

Liverpool Women’s Football Club is dead last in the Women’s Super League (WSL) standings. They technically have not gained a single point all season. Yet the deck has been heavily stacked against the team, with major injuries to key players — among them Captain Indigo Williams — as they’ve walked through their opening matches. This season has, in many ways, been an anomaly for Liverpool. They’ve conceded only four goals in their first 12 matches in all competitions, emphasizing their great defensive prowess while scoring has certainly been the main problem.

Further trouble for Liverpool as both Sophie Roman Haug and Marie-Therese Hobinger go down. Sadly, they’re going to be out for the rest of this season. Their absence will certainly be felt as the desperate team tries to get their season back on track. West Ham United are in a pickle at the moment. They’re not only in last place, but have the longest active losing streak in the WSL, coming off eight straight defeats. In spite of these travails, West Ham has the best defensive record in the league.

Aston Villa and Everton Close Contest

Aston Villa and Everton are separated by goal difference alone at the top of the WSL table. Just two points between these neck-and-neck rivals! Sabrina D’Angelo, Aston Villa’s goalkeeper, is having a breakout season. With a mind-boggling save percentage of 91.7%, she is definitely the best goalkeeper in the league. Things aren’t looking good for Aston Villa, who are still looking for their first point of the season after a staggering -15 goals difference so far.

As for Everton, well, it’s worth noting they have the joint-third lowest shot conversion rate in the league this season at 13.2%. This statistic is a result of the struggles they’ve had in being able to convert scoring opportunities. As both teams aim for improvement, the upcoming matches will be crucial for their ambitions within the league.

Leicester’s Rising Form and Brighton’s Setback

Leicester City are riding a wave of re-found confidence, having gone unbeaten in their last three matches between the WSL and the League Cup. The defense hasn’t conceded a goal in their last two matches. This highlights their impressive defensive prowess, which will be key as they prepare to face Honduras and Qatar next. Leicester’s upward arc coupled with teams like Liverpool and West Ham continuing to lose create a dangerous combination.

Brighton and Hove Albion in the wake of their own defeats preparedness ahead of approach to play. The club will be losing one of their young stars in Michelle Agyemang, who has torn her ACL, altering their squad depth greatly. Brighton’s ability to adapt and perform without key players will be tested in the coming weeks.

Chelsea Leads as League Favorites

Chelsea have become WSL frontrunners, winning the league pretty much every year and establishing themselves as this year’s league leaders. Their record of consistently punching above their weight serves them well. They’re seeking to further distance themselves from challenging upstarts such as Manchester City, heavy favorites in their next match with a star-studded squad indexing very high on paper.

Meanwhile, London City Lionesses are making their mark and continuing to grow into the WSL scene. The leaps they’ve made indicate that they are dangerous enough to become tough competition as the summer goes on. With various teams experiencing fluctuations in form, the upcoming weeks promise to deliver exciting matchups and potential shifts in league standings.
