As the action in the Women’s Super League (WSL) returns with an exciting Opening Weekend September 6-7, 2025. Prepare for some electrifying competition! The fans will be most eager to see the exciting matchup between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on the weekend of May 15-17, 2026. Chelsea are pumped up to win its record seventh straight WSL title. Last year, they beat out Manchester United for the title, winning it by a margin of only two points!
This season is a pivotal one for the league. It will increase to 14 teams beginning in the 2026/27 season. The top teams will battle fiercely, but this expansion introduces new challenges, with the last-placed team facing automatic relegation while the 13th-placed team must contend in a playoff against the WSL 2 runners-up.
Key Matchups and Title Contenders
Chelsea and Manchester United aren’t the only teams to keep an eye on this upcoming season. Arsenal, celebrating their European championship glory on the weekend, provide what should be a healthy challenge to Chelsea’s title defense. In a surprise move, the club has brought in Olivia Smith from Liverpool. She’s gone on to be the first ever £1 million player in women’s football! This shrewd piece of business further illustrates Arsenal’s determination to be among the best teams in the world.
Manchester City join the circle as well, hoping to bounce back to the top of the league’s food chain. And with Manchester United and City poised to go toe to toe, supporters are in line to enjoy a captivating environment in the league.
“I think we’ve been performing below what we want to in the last couple of years. We want to get to the end of every league run with a chance of the title, and that’s what we’re aiming for. We believe we can do it.” – Laura Coombs
New Beginnings for Liverpool and Tottenham
That’s the goal for Liverpool as they look ahead to what will be a brand new season. They, like Tottenham Hotspur, are ushering a new managerial era. Those additions may be the key as each team pursues a playoff berth in an ultra-competitive MLS league. For Liverpool, failing to qualify for European football last season was a disaster.
“It was a really big thing [to miss out on European football] and we need to make that right this season.” – Laura Coombs
Armed with new ideas and vision, and new leadership, like minded both clubs are out to make waves and upset the apple cart.
Broadcast Coverage and Season Structure
Sky Sports will have a leading role in bringing the WSL to new and broader audiences. They’ll be presenting all but 12 percent of all games—78 of them—all by themselves. With such broad coverage people will be engaged all season long. This will be followed by a winter break from December 22–January 4. The league returns to action on January 10.
That last weekend of the WSL season is currently set for May 17th. Looking forward to a thrilling finish to the campaign!
Each of these teams is preparing for a new competitive playing field. Whether it’s exciting new matches or heated new rivalries, fans are in for one of the most exciting seasons yet.
