Matthew Waite became the unlikely hero for Worcestershire with a composed 73 providing a good base to the innings. His innings gave the middle order some much-needed solidity and Rob Jones helped him anchor things with a score of 54. Combined, their efforts enabled Worcestershire to construct a competitive total, essential to continue their hopes for the title in the four-day final.
It was a toothless Essex bowling attack that failed to stem the run flow, floundering Shane Snater the pick of the Essex bowlers. Snater took three for 75 to be a real fly in Worcestershire’s ointment. His all-round display had an immediate effect on being the stumps of Brett D’Oliveira, asserting his impact on the game. Meanwhile, Matthew Critchley and Noah Thain provided additional support, taking two wickets each for figures of 13 and 71 runs, respectively.
Worcestershire’s innings got off to a slow start, with 84 for 3 on the board at lunch, with seven wickets still in hand. The team struck early challenges.
