The Women’s Championship and the Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) will undergo significant rebranding after the conclusion of the 2024/25 season. This transformation will bring both leagues under the umbrella of the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL), enhancing their visibility and identity within the realm of women’s football.
As part of this rebranding initiative, the Women’s Championship will be renamed the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 (Barclays WSL2). At the same time, the WSL will continue to exist under its known acronym. This strategic decision aims to develop a greater and more distinct brand for women’s football in England. It would only contribute to its fame, and help make someplace truly unique, unique again.
WSL Football collaborated with the creative agency Anomaly and EA Sports for the specialized campaign. Collectively, they’ve developed a bold, new brand identity that embodies the energetic motion and dynamism of female footballers. Underpinning this new visual identity is a desire to celebrate the artistry of a style of play that has come to define the women’s game.
“Developing this new visual world with Anomaly has been a real labour of love. No one plays football like a female – it is our strength and the way players move is one element of what makes women’s football distinctive and special.” – Ruth Hooper, CMO of WSL Football
This extension sees Sky Sports continue as the principal broadcaster for women’s football. They’ve signed a groundbreaking five-year agreement that will begin with the 2025-26 season. The deal ensures that over 75 percent of first choice picks will be Sky Sports exclusive. It expands to all the games on that last weekend, in closing.
The rebranding process has taken over half a year’s worth of work – months spent soliciting from clubs, fans, players, partners, and others such feedback. This holistic and inclusive approach aims to hear from as many types of business as possible. This allows the new branding to truly represent all stakeholders that play a part in the women’s game.
“As soon as this concept was brought to the table, we knew it was the right route, and we embraced it. It has taken months of work, and we have spoken to clubs, fans, players and partners who have all inputted during the process and been on this journey with us.”
This rebranding is set to bring the WSL and Barclays WSL2 a dazzling fresh aesthetic. Fans will be treated to a thrilling slate of competitive matches each week! London City Lionesses, winners of last season’s Women’s Championship. Going forward, though, they’ll be forced to battle within this newly monetized league ecosystem.
