Wolverhampton Wanderers are in a bit of a pickle after head coach Vitor Pereira was shown the door. The squad dealt with an abysmal opening to the Premier League campaign. The streak reached ten matches in all competitions without a win, prompting the decision. Wolves have been a surprise this season, as they now find themselves bottom of the league table. With just two points they are currently a mind-boggling eight points adrift of safety.
Pereira’s time had passed after a little over 14 months, topped with his firing in December 2024. His exit was especially shocking, considering it came just 45 days after he had signed a new three-year deal with the club. Wolves had indeed lost their opening four league matches by that stage. Wolves had a brutal weekend, capped off by a demoralizing 3-0 home loss to Fulham. This came after a tight 4-3 defeat to Chelsea in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup earlier that week.
Wolves are now the only winless team in England’s top four tiers, and questions about their Premier League fate have started to swirl around Molineux. Historically, no team has ever managed to avoid relegation after accruing two or fewer points after ten games in a Premier League season. This bleak reality only adds pressure on the club to find an adequate replacement for Pereira in the short term.
In their ongoing search for a new head coach, Wolves are apparently looking at a number of candidates. One of them is Rob Edwards, who once coached Luton Town to Premier League promotion in 2023. Edwards was appointed as Middlesbrough’s boss in June following Michael Carrick’s sacking and has since propelled the team to second place in the Championship this season.
Edwards recognized his ties to Wolves in formulating his candidacy, and credit to him for doing so early.
“You know my links to the club [Wolves],” – Rob Edwards
He is focused on his current role at Middlesbrough and remained non-committal about speculation regarding his future.
“Speculation is hard for me to comment about. We’ve done a decent job so far.” – Rob Edwards
At the same time, Gary O’Neil has pulled himself out of running for the Wolves job after holding positive talks with the club. The Wolves are in a bit of a panic mode looking for their next head coach. They’d like some strategic guidance to jumpstart their stumbling season.
Wolves are going through an incredibly difficult time. They need to move fast to hire a new permanent manager—someone that can change the city’s fortunes. They know what’s at stake. Their hope is to not suffer the ignominy of being the first team in Premier League history to be relegated after losing seven of their first nine matches.
