Woad Triumphs in Pro Debut at Women’s Scottish Open

At only 21 years old, Woad proved to be a real talent and she gave it everything. Most notably, she won the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open, earning her professional debut a fittingly brilliant three-stroke victory. Woad proved her extraordinary talent during a breathtaking performance at Dundonald Links in Ayrshire, Scotland. She finished strong, capping her historic week with a 4-under 68 on Sunday to finish at an astonishing 21-under par. In addition to the historic win, she cashed a cool $300,000 check. Today, she’s riding that momentum wave down a very favorable path as she looks toward the next AIG Women’s Open in Wales.

Woad’s path to this momentous victory has been equally remarkable. Only three weeks early, she had won the Women’s Irish Open as an amateur, proving there was something special about her. After that victory, she came within a whisker of winning the Evian Championship but fell a single stroke short of forcing a playoff. Choosing to skip her senior season at Florida State University was a risk worth taking. This turned out to be a shrewd move and has been handsomely rewarded her.

By winning the Scottish Open, Woad joins an elite group of golfers, matching the accomplishment of Rose Zhang, who triumphed in her LPGA Tour debut at the Mizuho Americas Open earlier this year. Woad’s win is a historic victory and a big step toward inclusivity after a month of memorable performances.

Starting strong on Sunday, Woad did not waste time cementing her dominance with birdies on the second and third holes. Her momentum gained nine consecutive pars. She soon added more birdies, including an impressive one at the par-5 No. Her steady hand all tournament long highlights the fact she is more than prepared for whatever comes her way during the Finals.

“My game was in a very good place, very consistent,” – Julia Lopez Ramirez

As Woad looks toward the AIG Women’s Open, she carries not only the weight of her recent success but the confidence gained from her performance at Dundonald Links. Her capacity to deal with hot pressure and perform under the most ultimate aggressive circumstances might be an asset in other major championships.

Woad’s story is still just beginning, but it’s having an incredible impact on those in the golfing world. Her remarkable debut shows both her talent as well as her ability to step up when needed. She has created amazing momentum. Now, all eyes will be on how she measures up against the best of the best when she lines up at Royal Porthcawl in July.
