Williams showed an unreal amount of toughness on Saturday. He almost immediately led the Chicago Bears to a thrilling 22-16 overtime victory over the Green Bay Packers. This win not only marked the Bears’ first overtime triumph since 2017 but highlighted Williams’ ability to orchestrate comebacks, as he now holds the NFL record for six comeback wins after trailing in the fourth quarter this season.
In a dramatic match, the Bears overcame a 10-point deficit in the final minutes, recovering an onside kick and scoring a touchdown in just two minutes to force overtime. The Bears pulled off a tremendous comeback, which made for their sixth win of the year. This is the most wins in these circumstances since the AFL and NFL came together in 1970.
The game took a pivotal turn when Williams connected with DJ Moore on a stunning 46-yard touchdown pass in overtime. It was this throw that won the team the championship. It stretched Williams’ record for the most winning drives of any Bears starting quarterback since the merger. The young quarterback earned a sense of redemption after throwing a game-sealing interception in a previous loss to the Packers just 13 days earlier.
“I knew it was beautiful,” Williams said about his game-winning pass to Moore.
Earlier in the week, Williams had a one-on-one meeting with new head coach Ben Johnson. This meeting was great preparation for developing the long touchdown play that followed. The installation of the custom play occurred only days before the game. This short lead time showed that smart planning was the key to a successful game day.
Through their most recent outing on December 7, the Bears were completely outclassed during last week’s game versus the Packers. Instead, Green Bay cornerback Keisean Nixon picked off Williams’ fourth-down pass attempt, clinching a 28-21 win for his squad. This past win proved to be an important opportunity for Williams to redeem himself. More significantly, it gave a shot of adrenaline to the Bears’ quest to return to the NFC playoffs.
DJ Moore expressed confidence in his quarterback’s abilities, stating, “I knew Caleb was going to give me a chance with the ball like he did at practice, and we connected on it.” Safety Jaquan Brisker was blown away with Moore’s route running and Williams’ flawless throw. He made the observation that both actors wonderfully accomplished what needed to be done.
Johnson reiterated the praise for the team’s preparation and execution all week, stressing how it manifested itself during their stellar execution on the field.
“I thought Caleb threw a dime in practice and DJ came down with it,” Johnson stated. “We’re hopeful that it may or may not be there, but we timed that one up right.”
Following this victory, the Bears have improved to a stout 11-4 record and are in prime position for a playoff run. Coach Johnson noted the significance of this victory: “I got a lot of great moments coming up. I think it’s a signature moment for us as a team to be able to build this confidence.”
