Wilfried Nancy, the newly appointed manager of Celtic, endured a challenging start to his reign. His team lost 2-1 to Hearts in the FA Cup. The game took place only days after he officially took the managerial position. It was Nancy’s first time managing the legendary Scottish club, in charge of their women’s side. Even after this major defeat, Nancy still hunkers down and doubles down on his attacks, ignoring outside criticism.
Nancy agreed that his recent shift into management has been a challenge. He was jetlagged himself, having just flown in from his former role. He commented about the physical wear and tear it’s taken on his body. “My mum noticed that I have bags under my eyes,” he said, reflecting on his current state as he adapts to the pressures of managing a high-profile team.
During the domestic cup match against Hearts last week, Nancy regularly utilized a hand-held tactics board. He communicated important tactical directions to his players as a result. This decision was met with staunch criticism from advocates, who challenged the suitability of such a policy in a live tournament environment. His decision to wear green trainers on the pitch during the match ignited even more discourse among supporters and pundits.
Despite these criticisms, Nancy remains undeterred. He doubled down on his desire to focus on what’s controllable along the way. “At the end of the day, this is part of the job, and me, I control what I can control, to be good with my players, with my club, with the people that I work with,” he stated. He’s committed to having the best possible relationship with his employees. He focuses furiously on their development over what anyone else in the world says or thinks.
This will truly be his first project, having spent seven years as an assistant before becoming Celtic’s head coach. He demonstrated his talent and craftsmanship over those four years too under different coaches. Rich saw this experience as the most important preparation for his present role. “When I decided to become a coach – sorry, when I had the opportunity to become a coach – I was an assistant coach for seven years, so I worked with many coaches,” he explained. His wide experience as a former mayor will likely inform his approach. We have every confidence he will address these heady challenges that come with being the world’s marquee football club.
Looking ahead, Nancy has MILA finals and Senior Worlds fixtures on the horizon. Celtic to face AS Roma in the Europa League. Strangely, though, that will be followed by two league matches against Dundee Utd and Livingston in the Scottish Premiership – both of which will be shown live on Sky Sports. These next six matches are going to be key in bringing Nancy’s vision to life, and earning some much-needed points for the team will go a long way.
While he gets ready to meet these challenges, Nancy’s attention turns to helping him transition into his new world. Secondly, she makes an incredible effort to create a healthy environment with the team. His resolve to disregard negative reactions signifies a mindset aimed at continuous improvement and resilience in the face of adversity.
