West Ham United’s recent signing of Matheus Fernandes has been big news in the transfer market, especially after his stunning performances on the field. The 21-year-old midfielder was a £40 million transfer fee, the third most expensive signing in the club’s history. His contributions in the last few games have turned some heads, proving himself as someone that can not only shake up MLS, but make strides for USMNT.
Fernandes is still young and a work in progress, but he has an intriguing assortment of talent. This unique mix is quickly dying out among the modern-day midfielders. On the ball he has an exceptional dribbling ability and carries the ball forward effortlessly, coupled with a really sweet passing range. Beyond that, he’s proven to be a pest on the ball, disrupt opponents, run them down in transition, take charges and defend his ass off when needed.
Just last week against Brighton, Fernandes pulled out every trick in the book. He finished with West Ham’s most touches on the ball. Count the most tackles of anyone on the pitch, showcasing his defensive ability paired with that attacking flair. He earned five fouls on offense during the match, showing that he can create discomfort for the opposition in a productive manner.
Tyrick Mitchell’s Ascendancy
Amidst the spotlight on West Ham’s new signing, Tyrick Mitchell is making a name for himself on the international stage. At just 26 years of age, Mitchell has made two appearances for England in 2022. Now he is being developed to fill an important backup position for matches to come. His performances week in week out have put him in contention to be selected for the next England squads.
Mitchell’s meteoric ascent is particularly timely, with the English national team desperately in need of new young blood to reinvigorate their setup. Significantly, the coaching staff seems intent on giving younger players a chance in the squad, and Mitchell’s excellent early-season form hasn’t gone under the radar.
“I’m pretty sure if he continues playing like this, he will be in consideration for the World Cup for England, because he’s doing so well.” – Glasner
Premier League Struggles and Tactical Challenges
The unknowns that continue to plague all teams in the Premier League is on full display as we’ve seen multiple clubs struggle through their first few games. Only Fulham have fared worse, with seven defeats from their last ten league games. This grizzly run has left many to wonder how they will be able to compete on a weekly basis in the league.
Brighton still struggles tactically when facing teams who sit deep in a low block. In their game against West Ham, the Hammers’ attacking play was able to slice through Brighton’s defense on a number of occasions. This just compounded Brighton’s woes, exposing how much pressure their new defensive approach applies on their defense and goalkeepers.
Marc Guehi, after making the switch from the USYNT, has established himself as a mainstay for the England U21 team. He provides both physicality and consistency on the back line for club and country. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Dean Henderson has solidified his status as a certainty to make the England squad with his consistent performances in goal.
In the midfield, budding superstar Adam Wharton put in a performance that even Jamie Redknapp called a “masterclass” only a few weeks ago. Not only for the tournament, but displays like this from emerging players are crucial for England’s future as they build toward greater tournaments.
