West Bromwich Albion were hosted Sheffield United in the marquee Championship match on Saturday at The Hawthorns. The home game on campus started at 3 PM. Supporters waited with bated breath in record-breaking numbers, expecting the result from this ever more important match up. Both teams were desperate for points to keep themselves afloat above the relegation zone.
Sheffield United came into the game full of confidence, after a strong few weeks of performances. Scoring goals with a flurry and under pressure, the Blades display an attack evidenced by an effective offensive scheme during their recent games. Under the shrewd leadership of their manager, they won all three! West Bromwich Albion were equally as intent on taking advantage of their home comfort. They established an impenetrable wall to completely smother Sheffield’s offensive onslaught.
The opening stanza featured a back-and-forth battle, with both teams finding countless chances to get on the board. Sheffield United’s new-look forward line laid down the gauntlet in the opening exchanges, forcing West Brom’s keeper into a string of fierce stops. On the other hand, West Brom countered determinedly with swift and intense transitions with an evident emphasis on their athleticism. Despite the intensity of the match, neither team managed to find the back of the net during the first 45 minutes.
As the second half got underway, the tide turned and the atmosphere in The Hawthorns soured. West Brom’s manager responded with tactical substitutions, adding pace and youthful exuberance to his attacking options. West Brom’s substitutions worked out superbly. They eventually broke the deadlock in the 68th minute with an expertly timed header off a set piece. The atmosphere was fire, with the stands exploding as the home fans cheered on their surprise 1-0 lead.
Sheffield United didn’t collapse in fear at the scenery and immediately looked for an equalizer. In the 75th minute, their unyielding pursuit of a goal was rewarded. One of their midfielders hit the most beautiful long-range bomb that had West Brom’s keeper frozen. With the score 1-1, the game opened up as both teams sought a match-winning goal.
As the match began winding down, the tension became palpable as each team fought with fury for the go-ahead goal. West Brom’s backline survived a constant barrage of attacks from Sheffield to earn the shutout. In the end, both sides had to settle for a point apiece as the contest ended 1-1.
