Victor Wembanyama, sidelined for the season due to deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, has rejoined his San Antonio Spurs teammates in Sacramento. The promising player, currently under medical treatment, traveled with the team to support new teammate De'Aaron Fox despite his ongoing recovery. Wembanyama's presence at the Golden 1 Center comes as a pleasant surprise for fans and teammates alike.
Wembanyama took a brief respite in Wyoming to unwind before returning home. Post-All-Star Game in San Francisco, the Spurs announced his condition, which requires strict adherence to a treatment plan involving blood-thinning medication. Team doctors have ensured it's safe for him to fly, although he is under orders not to engage with a basketball for now.
During the team's shootaround in Sacramento, Wembanyama sat on the bench, occasionally fiddling with his iPhone. His participation in team activities, even from the sidelines, underscores his commitment to support his teammates. De'Aaron Fox expressed his sentiments, emphasizing the collective desire for Wembanyama's health and presence.
"For us, we just want him to be healthy. We want him to be healthy enough to be able to get on a plane to be able to support us as a team. That's what he wants to do anyway." – De'Aaron Fox
The Spurs remain hopeful that Wembanyama will fully recover by the start of the next season. His condition is considered challenging, but with careful management by the team's medical staff, optimism persists. However, Wembanyama's travel with the team will be selective, as certain critical treatment stages may coincide with away games.
Assistant coach Mitch Johnson indicated discretion regarding Wembanyama's treatment details.
"Some of the stuff that has already been discussed [regarding Wembanyama's treatment], we'll probably keep it in-house for now," – Mitch Johnson
Wembanyama's journey reflects both personal determination and team support. The Spurs are navigating his health challenges with a focus on long-term recovery while ensuring he remains connected with his team.
