As the Washington Commanders return to their historic roots, we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome our Commanders back home. Or, as the league is calling them, three “uniform concepts.” Get ready! Owner Josh Harris has made it clear that he wants to honor the franchise’s history, and this new look is obviously an extension of that wish. The home team will definitely be wearing their traditional burgundy-and-gold color scheme. This fresh look seems to awaken some of that great franchise’s star power — three Super Bowl championships among them.
On July 9, 2022, the Commanders revealed their alternate uniforms. These designs look back in celebration to the original style prior to their name change and jersey rebranding back in 2022. Behind this decision is Harris’s commitment to honoring the team’s decades-long tradition. The team then naturally went on to win Super Bowls after the 1983, 1987, and 1991 seasons while wearing these iconic duds. Most famously, the team defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII wearing this unforgettable uniform.
The special alternate uniforms traded camouflage for a bold new look. The hat is decked out in an embroidered helmet design with a thick gold stripe in the center bordered by two thick white stripes and finished off with a gold facemask. This new design is a welcome return to aesthetic touches that had been scrubbed away following the 2021 season. The Commanders are scheduled to wear these alternate jerseys three times throughout the season: during Sunday night games against the Seattle Seahawks on November 2 and the Denver Broncos on November 30, as well as in their regular-season home finale against the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Day.
Earlier this year, Josh Harris became the owner of the Washington Commanders. Since then, he’s been focused on restoring the team’s brand. The league allows teams to change their look every five years. An ownership change creates an exemption that enables immediate alterations. The Commanders are betting on nostalgia, updating their iconic look for next season. Any permanent changes would need to be formally presented to the league for their approval a year in advance.
Their choice to return to this old-school model is hitting home with music lovers and gamers. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Doug Williams became the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl. He quarterbacked the Commanders to their championship-winning season. These jerseys harken back to the splendor of former accomplishments. They connect today’s players with the team’s deep history.
