Washington Commanders Part Ways with Pro Bowl Star Jonathan Allen

The Washington Commanders have made a significant roster change by releasing two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. The decision marks the end of an eight-year tenure for Allen, who had become a critical component of Washington's defense. This move frees up $16.3 million in cap space for the team, as Allen was entering the final year of his contract with a base salary of $15.5 million and no remaining guaranteed money.

Allen, 30, earned Pro Bowl honors following the 2021 and 2022 seasons, amassing an impressive 16.5 sacks during that period. Over his entire career with Washington, he recorded 42 sacks in 108 starts, showcasing his significant impact on the field. Despite this, sources indicate several teams expressed interest in Allen but anticipated his release, believing they could negotiate a more favorable deal once he became a free agent.

Selected 17th overall in the 2017 draft, Allen has been a consistent presence on Washington's defensive line. His durability was notable until last season when he missed nine games due to a torn left pectoral muscle. Prior to that, he had only missed three games over six years. Despite the injury setback, Allen returned to play in the last two regular-season games and three postseason contests, contributing three sacks, three tackles for loss, and seven quarterback hits.

Allen's roots trace back to Ashburn, Virginia, where the Commanders train, and where he played high school football. His release marks a significant shift in Washington's defensive lineup. The team recently traded Montez Sweat and Chase Young, leaving only Daron Payne from the once formidable defensive line that included Allen. To fill the void left by Allen’s absence during his injury, the Commanders had drafted defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton in the second round last year. Newton started alongside Payne in those nine games, demonstrating potential for future contributions.
