Warwickshire has announced the signing of Sri Lankan pacer Vishwa Fernando for the initial three games of the County Championship. This strategic move aims to strengthen their bowling attack as they seek to improve their performance from the previous season. Fernando, a left-arm bowler with 79 Test wickets to his name, will be available for crucial Division One home fixtures against Sussex and Nottinghamshire, as well as an away game against Durham.
Fernando's recent stint with Yorkshire in the 2024 season showcased his bowling prowess. He took an impressive 17 wickets in just three games, with standout match figures of 9-88 against Derbyshire. His addition to Warwickshire's lineup is expected to bring a significant advantage to the team's bowling department, offering variety and experience.
"We are delighted to have secured Vishwa for the first three rounds of the County Championship," said Mark Robinson, Warwickshire's head coach.
The Bears, who last clinched the title in 2021, faced challenges in 2023, finishing seventh in the season. Their campaign saw them winning only one game, while nine matches resulted in draws. The signing of Fernando, along with three other players—Hasan Ali, Ethan Bamber, and Beau Webster—represents a concerted effort by Warwickshire to bolster their squad ahead of the new season.
"He's a proven international bowler and a left-armer who will offer us great variation to complement our attack," added Mark Robinson.
Fernando's opportunity to play against Durham stands out as a notable point, given his previous association with the club. His experience and skill set are expected to provide Warwickshire with the edge needed to navigate the early fixtures successfully. The team hopes that these new signings will translate into improved results on the field.
