The Golden State Warriors have made a significant move in their quest for another NBA championship by acquiring All-Star forward Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat. In a trade that shook the league, the Warriors introduced Butler to the media, marking the beginning of a new chapter for both the player and the team. Butler expressed his enthusiasm for joining the Warriors, stating he is thrilled to have a fresh start and eager to contribute to the team's success.
The trade comes as the Warriors seek to provide their star player, Stephen Curry, with much-needed support. Butler, known for his ability to lead a team during the postseason, believes he can learn valuable lessons about winning from Curry, Draymond Green, and head coach Steve Kerr— all of whom boast four championships with the Warriors. The veteran forward is ready to make his mark and hopes to debut with Golden State on Saturday against the Chicago Bulls in Chicago.
Butler's acquisition involved a high-profile trade, with the Warriors sending Andrew Wiggins, Kyle Anderson, Dennis Schroder, Lindy Waters III, and a 2025 top-10 protected first-round pick to the Miami Heat. Furthermore, Butler agreed to a new two-year contract worth $111 million, which will keep him with the team through the 2026-27 season. This deal reflects the Warriors' commitment to maximizing their championship window with Curry and Green.
"We've picked a path and we're going in a direction and we have three kind of older generational players," Mike Dunleavy Jr., the Warriors' general manager, stated during Butler's introduction.
Dunleavy emphasized that acquiring Butler aligns with the franchise's strategic direction. As they prepare for future drafts, he noted that they would have multiple unprotected picks available and other attractive assets.
"Come this draft, I think we will have multiple unprotected picks available, pick swaps and anything else on the roster that people find attractive," Dunleavy added.
Butler's arrival in Golden State brings an air of excitement and anticipation. Known for his competitive spirit and clutch performances under pressure, he is expected to fit seamlessly into the Warriors' lineup. Head coach Steve Kerr highlighted Butler's postseason prowess as a key asset for the team.
"He is a big-time pressure player, postseason player," Kerr acknowledged, further expressing optimism about Butler's integration into the team's dynamic.
"So that would fit well in our locker room. We've got other guys who have been through the battles, been through the war. So I think when you put a group of guys like that together, there's going to be a belief, there's going to be a confidence that comes with that. And so I'm excited to see what that looks like." Kerr continued.
Butler also addressed his tumultuous past with the Miami Heat, including his suspension following a disagreement about his role off the bench. He assured everyone that those issues were behind him and expressed his eagerness to focus on his future with the Warriors.
"All of that is behind me, moving forward," Butler stated confidently.
"I'm happy to be here. I'm happy to be wanted again." he added.
The forward remains optimistic about his role within the Warriors' roster and how his personality will mesh with his new teammates.
"I think our personalities are going to be fine," Butler commented.
Draymond Green echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence that Butler would adapt well to the team's culture. Green's endorsement underscores the belief in Butler's ability to enhance the Warriors' championship aspirations.
Butler's sentiments reflect his readiness to make an impact with his new team.
"I got a feeling I'm [going to] be back, in a big way, too," Butler asserted.
With eyes set on competing for another title, Butler knows what it takes to complement Curry's playmaking abilities.
"We good. Pass the ball to Steph. And get out the way. Easy." he quipped.
