The Golden State Warriors faced a challenging battle against the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of their playoff series on Thursday night. Nonetheless, Stephen Curry battled valiantly for the Warriors, putting on a scintillating display with 29 points on 13 shot equivalents. That wasn’t enough as the Rockets upset them, winning the series 4 games to 3. To the return of a United States vs. Canada, winner-take-all, decisive Game 7, which will occur on Sunday.
Curry gave a paradoxical shooting performance on Wednesday night. He ended 9 of 23 from the field and made 6 of 16 from beyond the arc. His emotional driving layup with just 39 ticks remaining in the third quarter was probably the highlight of the evening. This exciting catch-and-run from Purdy brought the Warriors within one score. Curry made the big play after the Giants trailed by two points. Then he made two gigantic free throws to make it 86-84.
Beyond just what he was scoring, Curry’s overall impact was clear. He finished 7 for 13 overall with shooting splits that great, it’s no wonder he was awesome. To add on top of that, he made 9/9 from the free throw line, showing that he can make scoring chances count! He connected on a pivotal 3-pointer at the 3:35 mark, providing a glimmer of hope for the Warriors as they pushed to close the gap.
What stood out most about the game was the intensity, as these two teams were playing every possession like it was their last. Fred VanVleet told the media afterwards about how crucial it was to keep the pressure on throughout the game.
“Obviously we know what they bring to the table. So just make everything tough. Contest everything. We got the double big lineup in the back to clean up at the rim and rebound. And then at the other end stay in attack mode.” – Fred VanVleet
This strategy worked wonders for the Rockets, who benefitted from their aggressive defensive scheme and offensive rhythm. The two teams slugged it out, with the lead exchanging hands all game long. Ultimately, Houston hung on to win by making the most important plays during a contentious final few minutes of play.
