Warriors Face Uncertainty as Curry Exits Game 1 with Hamstring Injury

On May 6, 2025, the Golden State Warriors were dealt a crushing blow in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves after star player Stephen Curry left with an injury. He left the contest with a left hamstring strain. Curry, the driving force behind the Warriors’ playoff run, erupted for 13 points in a blistering 29 seconds. Then he turned to the bench for reinforcements. The throw was early in the second quarter. Just over 20 minutes later, he was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

After scoring on a driving 13-foot floater with 8:20 left in the opening half, Curry appeared to grab at his leg, indicating discomfort. This was a scary scene indeed for the Warriors, as they’ve needed the veteran playmaker more than ever during these playoffs. At 37 years old, the four-time champion continues to churn out elite production. He even shot through an injured shooting thumb in the earlier series against the Phoenix Suns. After suffering his most recent injury, it brings into question just how much he’d be able to contribute as the playoffs advance.

Curry’s overall first round performance against the Houston Rockets had been largely phenomenal. He averaged 24 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 5.7 assists over seven games. His all-world dominance carried the Warriors through a grueling series win over the Rockets. His possible absence in Game 1 vs Minnesota would be a massive blow. This series, which only has one day of rest between Games 1-5, adds to the urgency of that rest even more. The Warriors will have to navigate these challenges without their star player if his absence extends beyond this opening game.

Immediately after his injury, Curry walked off the court and immediately went into the locker room. This abrupt decision had fans and teammates alike worried about just how bad his situation could be. The Warriors organization will continue to eagerly await additional evaluations. Those tests will determine just how badly he is hurt and if he’ll have any shot at getting back for games just around the corner.

Ohm Youngmisuk, a veteran sports journalist who has covered various teams and leagues since 2006, noted that losing Curry for an extended period would be a devastating blow for the Golden State franchise. The team has built its strategy around Curry’s scoring and playmaking abilities, and any long-term absence would force them to adjust significantly.
