Darren Waller just set the tone for his 2023 debut with the Miami Dolphins, @DWRoller storyline. He was a key to their 27-21 win against the New York Jets on Monday night. Despite playing only 16 snaps, Waller’s contributions were not unexpected by those within the Dolphins’ facility. He put on a show, catching two touchdown passes. On top of that, he produced 27 yards on three receptions, showing off how he can help skyrocket Miami’s offensive firepower.
The 6-foot-6, 240-pound tight end was released earlier this year by the New York Giants. He retired in June 2024 to join the Canadian Football League but surprisingly returned to the field with the Miami Dolphins. Waller’s physical stature brings a new dynamic to Miami’s offense, and his experience adds depth to the team. He put together one of the most productive two-year spans in history in 2019 and 2020, catching 197 passes for 2,341 yards. His strong showing has obviously demonstrated that he can be the centerpiece player.
In the opening matchup against the Jets, Waller didn’t waste any time introducing himself. He converted a crucial third down on the Dolphins’ opening drive, setting the tone for the team’s offensive rhythm. Head Coach Mike McDaniel expressed confidence in Waller’s abilities, stating, “I knew he was fully capable. I just didn’t want to overcook it. It inspires me and I think it inspires his teammates … all he’s done is everything that he possibly can do and put his best foot forward, and he has been a phenomenal contributor to our team.”
Waller’s contributions extended beyond statistics. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on Waller’s first touchdown reception being the most electrifying one. He expanded on how Waller’s unique length is a huge factor in creating big plays.
“The first touchdown throw to him was an eye-opener for me just given the length that he has,” – Tua Tagovailoa
Beyond his impressive receptions, Waller admitted to the emotional side of coming back to live action. He described his experience as a mix of excitement and nerves, stating, “From the first third down of the game, just being able to line up and beat man coverage and win — it’s like your body and nervous system kind of remembers what it feels like to get out there and compete.”
At this point, Waller’s played his way into the conversation of what he’ll be used as in the offense going forward. Carmen will be unable to take most of the snaps in his next game against the Carolina Panthers. Still, he figures to have an outsized influence for as long as he is able to be on the field.
“I think naturally, it’s human to have some uncertainty having not just been in the line of fire with the bullets flying at full speed. It feels good to get back in the mix and know that I’m still capable of contributing and being one of the guys on offense that the team can lean on,” – Darren Waller
Waller’s relationship with Tagovailoa seems promising. The Dolphins’ Tagovailoa has made Waller a go-to target — a trend that should continue in future games, likely boosting opportunity for both players.
“In a way, that was a trust throw where I felt like, ‘Dang, that was high that I threw that ball,’ and for him to get up and make a play like that, kind of gives me more of an insight of what kind of ball I can throw to him if he’s ever coming across the middle, or if it’s a one-on-one matchup with him on a go ball,” – Tua Tagovailoa
As Waller gets more adjusted to life back in pro football, he’s a tantalizing offensive weapon for Miami. Given his unique blend of size, skill, and experience he has a chance to become an anchor of their new direction in years to come.
