The Dallas Mavericks are nearing an agreement to add Frank Vogel as their new top assistant coach. This increase comes after the recent move of Sean Sweeney to the San Antonio Spurs. At 52 years old, Vogel has had a long career that results in a ton of added experience to the Mavericks’ coaching staff. He is the former head coach of the Phoenix Suns during the 2023-2024 season.
On May 31, 2024, Vogel parted ways with the Suns. Despite recording a very respectable 49-33 record that year, he was fired. He signed a highly profitable, five-year, $31 million-dollar contract with the burgeoning franchise in June of 2023. Less than a year later, he was threatened with firing. Despite his firing, Vogel’s overall coaching record stands at 479 wins against 422 losses, showcasing a solid career in the NBA.
Vogel was hired to his new position with the Mavericks earlier this summer. He’ll join head coach Jason Kidd, who served as an assistant coach on Vogel’s 2019-20 championship-winning Los Angeles Lakers staff. This connection would prove vital for Kidd. That’s why it impacted his decision to recruit Vogel as an adviser for the Mavericks last season. Even so, their collective history and similar experiences in the league could offer a solid base for their partnership going forward.
With Sean Sweeney leaving the Mavericks for a promotional opportunity, it opened up the door for Vogel to come back to the organization. He had already served there in a consulting capacity. His deep knowledge of the locker room will make him an incredible resource for the players and coaching staff alike. Thanks to his tactical acumen, they’re set to come back even stronger next season.
Vogel’s hiring is a clear sign the Mavericks are serious about shoring up their coaching staff and becoming a more competitive outfit in the Western Conference. The franchise hopes that Vogel’s extensive knowledge and proven track record will help boost their performance as they prepare for the next chapter of their journey.
