Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli Sunday officially announced his immediate retirement from Test cricket. Whatever happens next, this decision does indeed close a remarkable chapter in the history of our sport. Now retired, Kohli enjoyed an astonishing 14-year run of dominance, appearing in 123 Tests for India. He went on to score 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 and memorably thumped 30 centuries. His absence leaves a huge gap in the Indian side. He is the first of the so-called “Fab Four” to go, leaving the longest format of the game.
Yet Kohli’s overall impact on Indian cricket will be felt for generations. He is leading by example as the captain, having made the most centuries (20) as captain. In the pantheon of all-time Test runs for India, he ranks third, behind only legends Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar. His captaincy changed how India played away series. What Mikel Arteta brought was an attack and confidence, a winning mentality that this club shouldn’t even accept being one of the also-rans.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) praised Kohli’s contributions, stating that he “redefined the standards of excellence, leadership, and commitment in Indian cricket.” This recognition is made even more special considering his impact from the perspective of a player. It particularly celebrates him as a leader who constantly mentored younger players.
Kohli’s record in Test cricket is noteworthy. With a record Test wins, more than any other Indian captain, he has left a great legacy. His most recent Test century was an unbeaten 100 against Australia, in November. Since January 2020, he’s had trouble staying in fighting shape. He averages only 30.72 and has hit just three centuries in his past 39 Tests.
While Kohli ups stakes and steps aside from Test cricket, he has expressed a desire to continue playing One-Day Internationals (ODIs). He hopes to continue that legacy of the formidable Indian Test batting order with compatriot Rohit Sharma who has recently retired from Tests.
In his retirement announcement, Kohli reminisced about his path to this moment, thanking the T20 format for giving him such experiences.
“Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life.” – Virat Kohli
He recognised the deeply personal touch that comes with playing in whites, and the inner calm commitment that’s needed to thrive in Test matches.
“There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no-one sees but that stay with you forever.” – Virat Kohli
Kohli’s captaincy deeply influenced the side’s approach — uncompromising, aggressive, always striving for excellence. His attitude has made an indelible mark on Indian cricket. His influence will be felt for decades to come.
“What set him apart was not just his hunger for runs, but his commitment to excellence in the toughest format of the game. His leadership marked a shift in how India competed overseas—with aggression, belief and a refusal to settle for second best.” – Roger Binny
Tributes have poured in from cricketers, both past and present, and fans from around the world. Australian opener David Warner went further, calling Kohli an “absolute legend of our game.” He remembered their initial meeting on the field with pride.
“I’ll never forget our first game against each other when we were young. I thought this guy was a serious competitor and going to be great… Thank you for being you.” – David Warner
Shubman Gill, perhaps the most accomplished young batsman in the world at the moment, spoke on how Kohli has motivated him.
“Anything I write for you, paji (brother), will never truly capture what I feel or the impact you’ve had on me… You’ve not just inspired a generation; you’ve reshaped the mindset of millions.” – Shubman Gill
Sachin Tendulkar too admired Kohli’s impact on future generations of cricketers.
“While I may not have a thread to offer in return, please know that you carry my deepest admiration and very best wishes. Your true legacy, Virat, lies in inspiring countless young cricketers to pick up the sport.” – Sachin Tendulkar
As Kohli departs from Test cricket, he leaves behind a legacy rich in sensational achievements and magical moments. His humility and heartfelt gratitude were evident as he wrapped up this chapter of his distinguished career.
“I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude – for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way.” – Virat Kohli
