Quarterback Daniel Jones, aged 27, has joined the Minnesota Vikings after being released from the New York Giants. The decision came as Jones cleared waivers and opted to join the Vikings, despite knowing his chances of playing in a game were slim. Meanwhile, Coach Kevin O’Connell and his staff are focused on refining quarterback Sam Darnold’s performance as they prepare for future competitions.
Jones becomes part of a group of four quarterbacks, all applying lessons from O'Connell's coaching team. His addition to the Vikings roster comes at a time of open competition for the quarterback position, as confirmed by Colts general manager Chris Ballard. This development is in line with Ballard's statement that adding competition helps elevate everyone's performance.

Jones' tenure with the Giants saw its highlight in the 2022 season when he threw for a career-high of 3,205 yards and led the team to their sole playoff appearance during his time there. However, he managed to throw over 15 touchdown passes only once throughout his seasons with the Giants. Despite this, the Vikings made the strategic decision to add Jones to their active roster for the playoffs.
With Jones now part of their plans, the Vikings have included him in their compensatory pick formula for 2026. This move reflects Minnesota's long-term strategy to strengthen their quarterback options amidst ongoing developments in player health and readiness.
Meanwhile, the Colts' Anthony Richardson, represented by agent Deiric Jackson, remains healthy despite having faced oblique and back injuries in 2024. Richardson reportedly has no intention of seeking a trade, further intensifying the competition at the quarterback position.
