The Minnesota Vikings are contemplating a notable restructuring of their quarterback depth chart following the recent signing of Daniel Jones, previously with the New York Giants. The move comes as a strategic response to the team's current starter, Sam Darnold, who has shown signs of inconsistency throughout the season.
Daniel Jones was added to the Vikings' 53-man roster on November 27, just four days after he was waived by the Giants. After starting his career with New York, Jones struggled significantly and was benched after ten games, ultimately dropping to the third team. As he aims to reset his career before entering free agency this spring, the Vikings see potential in him as a valuable asset.
Currently, Darnold holds the starting position for Minnesota and has been reliable enough to start all 17 games this season. However, the team recognizes the need for a contingency plan in case Darnold faces injury or ineffectiveness. Nick Mullens, who has served as Darnold's backup throughout the regular season, appeared in relief four times but did not prove to be a long-term solution.
Darnold’s performance has been under scrutiny, particularly following a disappointing outing against Detroit where he missed multiple open receivers. His off-target rate of 34.5% in that game marked one of the lowest points in his career.
In light of these concerns, Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell emphasized the team's commitment to optimizing their chances of victory moving forward. He stated, "The best way I can put it is we're doing everything we can to get Sam ready to go, but at the same time, whether it's Nick or Daniel or Brett, having all those guys absorbing the game plan like always. It's such a fluid thing here the rest of the way. We're going to do whatever we think gives us the best chance to win."
Jones has been diligently working with quarterbacks coach Josh McCown and fellow quarterbacks Nick and Brett Rypien to enhance his skills. O'Connell remarked on Jones's progress: "He's gotten a lot of really good work in both running scout team works and then just extra work here and there when he can with [quarterbacks coach Josh McCown] and Nick and Brett [Rypien] as well."
The Vikings' decision to sign Jones not only provides them with additional depth but also serves as a proactive measure should Darnold depart via free agency. The organization is also evaluating Jones as a potential pairing with J.J. McCarthy, who currently holds the No. 2 quarterback position.
