The Minnesota Vikings have released veteran center Garrett Bradbury, marking a significant change in their offensive line strategy. The decision to part ways with Bradbury comes shortly after the team signed free agent Ryan Kelly to take over the center position. Bradbury, who was selected 18th overall in the 2019 draft, has been a fixture in the Vikings' lineup for the past six seasons. His release is part of a broader restructuring effort by the Vikings to enhance their offensive line capabilities.
Garrett Bradbury's tenure with the Vikings saw him manning the center position since his rookie year. Despite his consistent presence on the field, Bradbury often struggled against more powerful defensive linemen, a challenge attributed to his relatively smaller size for an NFL center at 300 pounds. Following the 2022 season, the Vikings extended Bradbury's contract for three years, though the deal notably included no guaranteed money for 2025. This allowed the team flexibility in their roster decisions, ultimately leading to his release.
The Vikings plan to designate Bradbury's release as a post-June 1 transaction, which will save them $5.25 million against the salary cap. This financial maneuvering provides the team with additional resources to bolster other areas of their roster. In addition to releasing Bradbury, the Vikings traded former right guard Ed Ingram to the Houston Texans in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft. This trade further underscores the team's commitment to revamping their offensive line.
In place of Bradbury, the Vikings have signed Ryan Kelly to a two-year contract worth $18 million. Kelly brings a wealth of experience and accolades to Minnesota, having been selected for the Pro Bowl four times during his nine-year tenure with the Indianapolis Colts. His addition is expected to provide stability and strength to the center position, addressing one of the key weaknesses observed in past seasons.
Furthermore, the Vikings have also reached an agreement with offensive tackle Justin Skule. Skule, who started five games last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is expected to add depth and versatility to the offensive line unit. These moves reflect the Vikings' strategic efforts to enhance their offensive performance by integrating seasoned talents with proven track records.
