General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has made no secret of the fact that Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy is their preferred option to take over as QB1. On Wednesday, Adofo-Mensah addressed the media on the direction of the franchise. He pointed to McCarthy as the product they want and are still making after many talks and trials.
The change follows the Vikings’ spending development behind-the-scenes, having been one of two finalists for free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Coach Kevin O’Connell and Rodgers had numerous discussions, highlighting the team’s interest in considering all possible options. So even Adofo-Mensah knew that talking about a player like Rodgers is different than anyone else. This recognition represents a new direction for the organization.
These proved enticing enough that despite showing interest in free agency to veteran quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones, both players opted to sign elsewhere. This news only further solidified the team’s confidence that McCarthy was the future, and would soon become the default starting quarterback. “At every checkpoint, whether it been the draft process or practice until the injury and really the offseason now, he’s met the bar,” Adofo-Mensah stated.
Adofo-Mensah expanded on his positive relationship with the Wilf family, owners of the Minnesota Vikings. He was confident of their support and of feeling appreciated for the valuable service he had provided to the organization. “I think when you sit down in a conversation with me and interview me and you get to know me as the person I am integrity wise,” Adofo-Mensah explained, underscoring his commitment to making decisions that benefit the team’s future.
Adofo-Mensah responded to questions about the pressure to reach a long-term agreement with Coach Kevin O’Connell. His own contract was extended. If he is implementing it in earnest, he should be clear that this is not a bug—this is a feature. He noted that throughout their negotiations, O’Connell proactively communicated with him. Adofo-Mensah’s contract has not been amended since coming aboard with the Vikings in January of 2022. It is set to expire following the 2025 season.
Reflecting on his office environment, Adofo-Mensah pointed to a quote on his wall that reads, “Happiness is good health and a poor memory.” It’s an indication of the values he nurtures and prioritizes in his personal and professional worlds.
