It’s a key moment of truth ahead for Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. With the NFL draft just a few days away, the stakes couldn’t be higher. His contract runs out in a year, and no extension has been announced at this point. Even with all that scrutiny on his upcoming draft decisions, he is positive on where the team is going. During his tenure, the Vikings rose to the sixth-highest winning percentage in NFL history at .667. This stellar resumé underscores his ability to achieve a much longer stay with the organization.
The Vikings emerge from next week’s draft with just four picks, the fewest in the league. This odd situation casts doubt on Adofo-Mensah’s overall approach to maximizing their scarce resources. He thinks current free agency moves have created more opportunities to draft the best talent. His biggest piece of advice, he says, is that teams should be pro-active, not reactive. This idea is at the heart of Adofo-Mensah’s thinking as he prepares for the 2024 draft.
Because so far Adofo-Mensah’s tenure has been marked by a just-as-deliberate plan to woo. His four-pronged vision looks to align the team’s efforts towards the most impactful decisions, as opposed to just filling strategic gaps. “You’ve got to step out from there, take your Clark Kent glasses off and just have a championship mindset and swing for a great player,” he emphasized, indicating his desire to think big during the draft.
Acknowledging the pressure of his contract situation, amid team ownership support, Adofo-Mensah has received praise for his work. Mark Wilf, one of the co-owners of the Vikings, said he had full faith in Adofo-Mensah’s capability. “We feel great about the moves he’s made in terms of positioning, along with coach O’Connell and executive director of football operations Rob Brzezinski in terms of our salary cap position, our draft position and potential. And that’s why we have all the faith in Kwesi,” said Wilf.
Now, Adofo-Mensah is preparing for that draft. He’s acutely aware that the future of 2024 on which success rests today — like potential star players McCarthy and Turner. What remains undeniable are the contributions he’s made early on as a rookie that have drawn a line in the sand. The Vikings are counting on a lot of these young guys to be impact players and contribute in a big way.
The general manager’s decisions will be under close scrutiny as the team focuses on improving its roster with limited draft capital. Adofo-Mensah acknowledges this weighty responsibility: “We don’t know how that answer’s going to work out, but looking back on it, we feel good about that exact approach and that thought process.” His strategic foresight is designed to get the team through the minefield that is the NFL draft while always keeping one eye on the future.
Adofo-Mensah’s collaborative efforts with Coach Kevin O’Connell and Brzezinski have positioned the Vikings favorably within the constraints of their salary cap and draft standing. Last offseason, he outdid himself, trading both fourth-round and sixth-round picks. He has made bold moves to bring in left tackle Cam Robinson and running back Cam Akers to make clear his commitment to creating a competitive roster.
Yet despite the uncertainty over his own contract extension, Adofo-Mensah is clearly still realizing how foundational his role as a trade architect will be. “I’m pretty tough on myself, I would say,” he noted, underscoring his commitment to accountability and excellence in his position.
