Vikings Contemplate Quarterback Future: Darnold’s Potential Return and McCarthy’s Comeback

The Minnesota Vikings are facing pivotal decisions regarding their quarterback lineup as they consider securing Sam Darnold for the long haul. Currently playing on a one-year, $10 million contract, Darnold has impressed with a career-high of 4,319 passing yards and 35 touchdowns over 17 starts in the 2024 season. The Vikings are weighing the options of signing him to a multiyear contract or applying the franchise tag for 2025. Meanwhile, J.J. McCarthy, the team’s first-round pick in 2024, is making strides in his recovery from a torn meniscus and is eager to compete for the starting position next season.

Kevin O'Connell, the Vikings' coach, has expressed enthusiasm for Darnold's capabilities, highlighting his potential for success with the team. O'Connell is considering all options and has not dismissed the possibility of retaining Darnold for the 2025 season. This comes as the team has been evaluating their quarterback options intensively over the past three weeks.

J.J. McCarthy, sidelined during the season due to injury, is back on the field for training. He has been in discussions with O'Connell about the team's future and has expressed his desire for an equal opportunity to prove himself.

"All I can ask for is a fair opportunity," said McCarthy, emphasizing the importance of fairness in competition.

"That's the one thing that I feel like everybody's given and it's fundamental," he added.

Despite the complexities that monetary considerations introduce, McCarthy remains focused on what he can control.

"When money gets involved, things get complicated and reps get skewed and there's different things that come into the whole political world that everyone talks about," he noted. "But I really just have to focus on controlling what I can control."

As McCarthy diligently works on his rehabilitation, he is expected to be ready for the 2025 season. The Vikings are contemplating whether to hand him the reins in 2025, leveraging his potential development under O'Connell's guidance.

"My feelings don't matter. I'm not getting any grace. There's no sympathy. This is the big leagues," McCarthy remarked, showcasing his determination to earn his place.

In another development, Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals was honored with the AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award on Thursday night, setting a benchmark for resilience and performance that McCarthy aspires to emulate.
