As appreciation and advocacy for use of the road grew, Victoria Road has emerged as a central point in the city’s continuing urban development fight. This lifeline of a roadway serves to promote not just connectivity operations, safety, and the connective nature of this invaluable corridor. The city’s planning department has identified Victoria Road as a primary area for infrastructure improvements and revitalization projects, aiming to boost local businesses and improve residents’ quality of life.
So in early 2023, we kicked off the initiative to repave and improve Victoria Road. We were motivated by increasing traffic congestion and an urgent need for updated infrastructure. The planning department worked hard to gain the support of the community, holding several rounds of public consultations with local residents and businesses. Through these discussions, we were able to garner insight into the community’s desire for a safer, more accessible road that accommodates both vehicle traffic and pedestrians.
City officials heard community concern and responded with leadership and accountability. They suggested a complete streets approach — widen the road for safety, but include bicycle lanes and better sidewalks. In addition, as part of the safety plan, new streetlights and signage will be added to keep all users safe. The extension will bring green spaces along the route, giving residents new spots to retreat and hang out.
Construction on Victoria Road is expected to start in mid-2024, with an expected completion date in late 2025. Throughout this time, city officials have promised residents that they will do everything possible to avoid the worst of the inconveniences. Traffic management plans should be implemented ahead of time so that the impacts on vehicle movements during construction can be minimized.
For new local business owners, the future of the street represents optimism and opportunity. They are confident that these improvements will inspire greater pedestrian activity and greater ease of access for their clientele to their businesses and services. “A better Victoria Road means more customers for us. We are excited about the potential growth this project can bring,” said one local business owner who has operated on the road for over a decade.
The city’s broader commitment to revitalizing Victoria Road represents a larger movement across North America to promote urban development. We found eager and engaged officials doing everything possible to create a dynamic, inclusive future community. They want residents to have easy access to essential services, green spaces, and places of business. This vision means creating an ecosystem that supports and prioritizes sustainable and equitable transportation choices, like walking and biking.
Along with these transpo improvements, the community project prioritizes addressing social inequities underlying issues in community. City planners have added plans for some permanent public art installations along Victoria Road, which will help celebrate area culture and history. These artistic elements enhance residents’ sense of identity and pride. On top of that, they improve the area’s beauty and charm.
The successful revitalization of Victoria Road has spurred more investment into the adjacent neighborhoods. With better infrastructure in place, city officials are optimistic that new businesses will follow, creating jobs and spurring economic development along the way. The project therefore stands as a major success story and catalyst for future growth and development.
Throughout the life of the project, city officials will work with the community, providing regular updates and hosting public forums to help ensure that these innovations address community concerns. We need to continue this conversation. It’s important to keep residents’ needs and concerns a priority during the entire construction period.
