Veteran Linebacker Shaq Thompson Eyes New Chapter Amidst Setbacks

The Carolina Panthers have informed veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson that he is free to explore free agency, marking a significant transition for the team's long-time defensive stalwart. Despite his aspirations to conclude his NFL journey with the Panthers, Thompson, aged 30, faces an uncertain future following two injury-plagued seasons. The decision comes after the linebacker endured a series of setbacks that limited his contributions on the field.

Thompson's journey with the Panthers began as the 25th pick in the 2015 draft, where he quickly became a crucial part of the team's defense. He made an impact by helping Carolina reach the Super Bowl in his rookie season. Over his career, he amassed 741 tackles, placing him fourth on the Panthers' all-time tackle list, trailing only legends like Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, and Mike Minter. In 2022, he notched a career-high 135 tackles, showcasing his enduring prowess.

However, the past two seasons have been challenging for Thompson. Limited to just six games due to injuries, he suffered a broken ankle in Week 2 of the 2023 season. His 2024 season was cut short by a torn Achilles during a Week 4 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. These injuries have significantly impacted his ability to contribute consistently to the team.

Despite these setbacks, Thompson remains hopeful about his future with the Panthers. Known for his leadership, he served as a five-time captain and has expressed his desire to be part of the organization's rebuild after seven consecutive losing seasons.

"Yeah, I want to end my career here," Thompson stated in January, emphasizing his commitment to the team.

The Panthers' decision to allow Thompson to enter free agency was acknowledged by Dan Morgan, who expressed gratitude for Thompson's contributions over the past decade.

"We appreciate Shaq's leadership and dedication over the past 10 seasons,'' Morgan said.

In light of Thompson's departure, Morgan also extended best wishes for his future endeavors.

"We wish Shaq the best as he moves forward with his career."
