Venus Williams, the renowned tennis champion, has received a wild card entry to compete in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, scheduled to take place from March 2-16, 2024. This marks a significant moment for the 44-year-old athlete, who has a storied career highlighted by seven Grand Slam singles titles, 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, and two Grand Slam mixed-doubles titles.
Williams’ upcoming participation will be her tenth appearance at Indian Wells, having made her debut in 1994. Her career has been distinguished by remarkable achievements, including a gold medal in the singles tournament at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and three gold medals in doubles at the Olympics in 2000, 2008, and 2012. However, her journey has not been without challenges. Williams notably boycotted the Indian Wells tournament from 2002 to 2016 after experiencing racist abuse during her previous appearances.
Despite her impressive accolades, Williams has faced difficulties in recent years. She has not competed since her first-round exit at the Miami Open in March 2024 and has not secured a match victory on tour since August 2023. As a result of ongoing injuries, she has slipped to 974th in the world rankings.
The BNP Paribas Open will also feature two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitová, who has also received a wild card entry. Kvitová is making her return to competitive play after a 15-month hiatus for maternity leave following the birth of her first child. The inclusion of both Williams and Kvitová adds excitement to the women's draw, drawing attention from fans and media alike.
