USGA Opens Door for LIV Golf Players with New U.S. Open Exemption Pathway

The United States Golf Association (USGA) has paved a new path for players in the LIV Golf League to qualify for the U.S. Open. Starting in 2026, the top 10 players on the LIV points list as of April 7 will receive exemptions from the first stage of 18-hole qualifying. This new category offers a direct route for LIV golfers, marking a significant development in golf's competitive landscape.

Currently, prominent LIV players such as Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Richard Bland, Phil Mickelson, and Cameron Smith hold exemptions. The USGA aims to include more LIV talents by offering exemptions to players not already exempt, provided they rank among the top three in the standings when the exemption is awarded.

This year, the U.S. Open will grant an exemption to the leading player not otherwise exempt and within the top three of the LIV individual standings as of May 19. This decision comes as LIV Golf enters its fourth season, debuting under the lights at Riyadh Golf Club in Saudi Arabia. The league boasts a fresh network deal with Fox Sports, expanding its reach and influence.

In 2026, five LIV events will precede the exemption offer, ensuring ample opportunity for players to secure their standings. The U.S. Open's upcoming tournament is set for June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club, located in Pittsburgh's suburbs.

"Every golf fan in the world longs to see the greatest players in the world competing on golf's biggest stages at the majors," – Scott O'Neil, CEO of LIV Golf

The USGA's initiative represents a historic move as the U.S. Open becomes the first major to establish a direct pathway for LIV Golf participants. In contrast, the PGA Championship has extended invitations based on world rankings, while other majors have not excluded players from the Saudi-backed league. The PGA of America categorizes LIV players under "special invitations," lacking distinct criteria.

John Bodenhamer, USGA chief championships officer, emphasizes that this step aligns with their longstanding approach to evaluate talent across professional tours and amateur events. The organization continuously seeks ways to ensure those performing at their best can compete in national championships.
