The United States Golf Association (USGA) and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) have unveiled new pathways for LIV Golf League players to participate in prestigious golf championships. In a significant development, the USGA has introduced an exemption category for the U.S. Open, granting a spot to the leading LIV golfer among the top three in the individual standings halfway through the season. This year's notable opportunity will see a LIV golfer earn a place at the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, from June 12-15.
The R&A has echoed this inclusivity by providing a qualification pathway for LIV Golf competitors to partake in The Open Championship. This year's leading LIV golfer, not otherwise exempt, from the top five in individual standings through the Carrollton, Texas tournament on June 27-29, will secure a spot in the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland, from July 17-20. The R&A's commitment underscores its dedication to maintaining a strong field and delivering thrilling competition for fans worldwide.
"The Open is a global championship for the best men's golfers and each year we review our exemptions to ensure that we offer pathways into the championship based on results achieved on the leading professional tours." – Mark Darbon
LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil expressed gratitude for these advancements. He praised the leadership of Mark Darbon and the R&A for their forward-thinking initiatives that enhance golf's global appeal.
"We thank Mark Darbon for his leadership and the R&A for taking this step for the benefit of moving golf forward," – Scott O'Neil
Historically, the PGA of America has extended special invitations to LIV Golf players based on the Official World Golf Ranking. Moreover, past major championship winners such as Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Phil Mickelson remain exempt for The Open this year. Additionally, LIV golfers continue to have opportunities to earn spots through their world ranking and the Open Qualifying Series.
While The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club does not feature a specific exemption category for LIV players, it consistently invited LIV Golf captain Joaquín Niemann in recent years. This gesture emphasizes Augusta's recognition of talent across different leagues.
Looking ahead, in 2026, the U.S. Open will further extend invitations to the leading player from the final 2025 individual standings and the top golfer from May 18, 2026, if they are not already exempt and ranked in the top three.
"We acknowledge that players competing in LIV Golf should also have the opportunity to secure places in The Open through its individual season standings as well as existing pathways." – Mark Darbon
