US Open Prize Purse Reaches Historic $90 Million Mark

Well, the US Open just delivered some great news for 2024! Similarly, the prize purse will break all previous records at $90 million—a staggering 20% jump from last year’s total of $75 million. This historic increase is a result of the tournament’s ongoing dedication to increasing monetary rewards for amateurs at all stages and competitions.

This year’s men’s and women’s singles champions will each take home a record $5 million. That’s a historic 39% jump from the $3.6 million awarded in 2023! The winners in these categories will receive $2.5 million each, reflecting a 26% increase over last year. Specifically, each of the 40 semifinalists will take home $1.26 million and each of the 80 quarterfinalists will earn $660,000, representing 26% and 25% respective increases.

To raise the stakes even higher, the US Open will award the mixed doubles champions $1 million. This makes it even more exciting outside of singles tournaments! The mixed doubles competition will take place August 19 and 20. In a new and thrilling twist, the Tournament will consist of eight doubles teams determined by the teams’ combined singles rankings, while eight more teams will be awarded wild-card entries. Among these intriguing pairings are Carlos Alcaraz/Emma Raducanu and Aryna Sabalenka/Grigor Dimitrov.

The tournament organizers have committed another $5 million to cover costs for players, giving even more athletes the opportunity to participate in this landmark event.

“The US Open has made a deliberate and concerted effort to ensure double-digit percentage increases from 2024 in all rounds of all events for all players, while at the same time significantly increasing the percentage of prize money for athletes playing deep into the singles draws,” stated a press release from the US Open.

The tournament’s qualifying rounds are set to begin on August 18. The singles competition will begin on August 24 and conclude with the women’s final on September 7.

The US Tennis Association aims to “elevate mixed doubles with a bigger spotlight and provide a greater opportunity to inspire more people to play and grow the sport.”

Players Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori criticized certain aspects of the event organization, labeling it a “pseudo-exhibition” that presents “a profound injustice” to an entire category of players.
