Like Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander, who recently participated in his first virtual workout. That’s led to more rather incredulous questions about his future with the team. Even as voluntary in-person workouts started Monday, it was uncertain if Alexander had shown up in Green Bay. Whether or not he plays at this stage could have major ramifications for his future, as well as the Ravens’ long-term defensive plans.
Drafted as the 18th overall pick in 2018, Alexander was an immediate impact player on the highway-going Pack’s defense. He signed a four-year, $84 million contract extension. As part of this deal, he became the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL at the time. Even with this cap hit, Alexander’s availability has been a major issue over the past two seasons. He played in seven of 17 regular season games in 2023, then replicated that total in 2024. Injuries and a midseason suspension cut into his playing time, eventually causing him to miss the rest of the season after November 17, 2024.
Even with the struggles, Alexander had an immeasurable impact on the team’s defense. He ended the 2024 season with seven pass breakups, ranking second on the team in that category, and tied for second in the locker room with two interceptions. His performance only exaggerates what he can accomplish despite the challenges he’s had to endure.
The Packers certainly have a major investment in Alexander’s development. He has two years left on his deal. If he attends the ongoing NFL-mandated minimum of 11 offseason workouts, he is in line to receive a $700,000 workout bonus. This financial carrot can potentially encourage him to participate more than just half-heartedly in team building exercises.
Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst has been noncommittal on the subject of Alexander returning to Green Bay. His recent comments hint at ongoing discussions about the cornerback’s status:
“We’ll work through that as we go.” – Brian Gutekunst
Widespread excitement from fans and analysts alike. They question whether Alexander will emerge as a breakout star for the Packers in 2025. He may be able to still fit for the Packers next year. Even more than all that, uncertainty about his condition and participation hangs heavily.
