Brandon Aiyuk’s recent past has been plagued with notable injuries. He endured a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus in his right knee during Week 7 of last season. Since then he has been doing rehab but has otherwise missed most, if not all, of the team activities and practices since then.
Despite his efforts, Aiyuk’s progress has been slow, and Shanahan confirmed that the team will not open Aiyuk’s practice window during the bye week. Similar to any future decision, this move gives exactly four weeks for Aiyuk to get back on the field and be able to play in the regular season.
Shanahan further pointed out how rare Aiyuk’s situation is. He continued, “I’ve been coaching over 20 years, and I’ve never been in a situation where a contract’s been voided. The coach’s comments highlight the unprecedented nature of Aiyuk’s situation within the organization.
Financial Implications for the 49ers
The financial ramifications of Aiyuk’s impending contract situation foreshadow an already tangled web with consequences that only deepens the dilemma. If his existing team, the 49ers, choose to release him outright, they would incur an absolutely crippling dead-money cap charge. This would be a total of about $29.585 million. This massive economic handicap has forced the squad to reevaluate their options.
One possible approach for the team would be to make Aiyuk a post-June 1st release. Under this strategy, the team is able to amortize that dead money over two seasons. It would both alleviate their extreme cap situation and leave them ample flexibility to pursue other potential roster upgrades.
Second among the initial picks, Aiyuk’s $24.935 million roster bonus for 2026 guaranteed on April 1. This means that any decisions regarding his future will have immediate monetary impact for the franchise.

He noted that past events do not necessarily dictate what lies ahead: “What happened in July, to me, doesn’t have anything to do with the future.” The organization wants Aiyuk to get back on track as much as he does.
