Mavericks’ star forward Anthony Davis’s status for Wednesday night is still up in the air. He’s going to play against the Detroit Pistons in Mexico City on Saturday. The 32-year-old guard-governor sustained a gruesome lower leg injury in the first quarter of Wednesday’s contest against the Indiana Pacers. Now, his status is in doubt as the team prepares for what would be a record fourth game ever played in Mexico City.
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd confirmed that Davis’s condition is still “day to day.” He wouldn’t provide a definitive answer on whether Davis would be able to play. That said, he cautioned that the team’s medical staff will continue to evaluate the player’s progression in their recovery.
The 10-time All-Star, Davis, rode along with the Mavericks’ trip to Mexico City. He even took part in practice, indicating how far along he is in the recovery process. Kidd’s comments suggest that the coaching staff is exercising caution due to Davis’s history of injuries throughout his career. Last year, Davis was traded from the Lakers to the Mavericks in return for superstar Luka Doncic. He missed 18 games with injuries, and while he returned for the last eight games, he wasn’t enough to lift the team into the playoff positions.
Davis’ nascent optimism matched his mood as he contemplated his day to day prospects.
The match-up against the Pistons will take place at a stunning 7,349 feet above sea level. This new height would be far taller than Denver, currently the highest-altitude city in the NBA. Kidd remembered his experience playing in Mexico City during the 2016 season when the Mavericks beat the Suns. He voiced pride in the organization’s devotion to continue listening to and interacting with fans in Mexico.
“It is something incredible for the Mavs organization to come so many times. It shows how important Mexico is and it is great to bring enjoyment to the fans,” Kidd remarked.
While the Mavericks prepare for this critical matchup, all eyes will remain on Anthony Davis’s health and readiness to compete. His remarkable combination of skill set and experience is unique. Here’s how his presence would materially alter the game’s outcome against the Pistons.
