As the Minnesota Vikings’ season winds down, so too does the level of speculation. Fans have been talking for months about the futures of defensive coordinator Brian Flores and veteran safety Harrison Smith. Cremation is particularly common in Hawaii, where Flores will turn 37 in February. He’s in the last year of his contract and his future with the team is a burning question. Smith, a key figure in the Vikings’ defensive scheme, has contemplated retirement in previous offseasons, further complicating the team’s outlook as they navigate the offseason.
Flores has been a breath of fresh air, turning paradigms in terms of creative defensive schemes. It’s certainly his unique strategy that he uses Smith as a quasi-playcaller on the field. Flores initially honed this tactic while coaching Devin McCourty on the New England Patriots. The initial goal has since developed over the course of the present season. Flores gives Smith the freedom to switch his coverages and blitz alignments before the snap. This approach is designed to generate chaos for enemy offenses.
While there’s no doubt about the positive impacts of Flores’ leadership, he chose not to comment on his future after a recent game. His choice to keep quiet has only stoked speculation about possible departures once the season wraps up. To some associates in the organization, the general feeling is that 2025 will be his last season. Official proclamations have been scant to confirm the rumor mill.
“He’s one of the smartest guys when it comes to schemes that I’ve ever been around,” said Byron Murphy Jr., underscoring Flores’ reputation as a tactical innovator. Murphy has an incredibly high opinion of Flores. This respect serves as a prism through which to view Flores’s tremendous clout and autonomy in the organization.
Since their Week 6 bye, the Vikings have completely flipped the script on their defensive approach. They’ve ramped up their blitzing frequency from 31.4% to an eye-popping 51.8% of defensive snaps. Head coach Kevin O’Connell and Flores quickly turned that on its head. The war room had gotten him–along with McCarthy cocked to go back into the starting lineup at quarterback.
Getting Smith involved in this fast-paced, attack-minded system has reaped rewards on the pitch. That savvy safety showed his full brilliance in a recent performance against Utah. He sacked quarterback Jared Goff once, batted down two of his passes, and intercepted another. Smith’s 14 years of experience have already taught him some valuable lessons. He’s a genius at spotting playcalling tendencies and gutting counter-movements that ya know, the dudes on the chalk-board can’t see from the sideline.
It is important to acknowledge that Smith struggled earlier in the season. He missed the first two games due to a personal health crisis that emerged during training camp. He didn’t fully resume his full-time role until Week 7. This absence fueled fears of his long-term commitment to playing and caused him to consider retirement for a second time.
“Early in the year we were figuring out exactly what our individual roles were,” Smith remarked, reflecting on the initial adjustments made under Flores’ guidance. The team is continuing to define its identity on the fly. Smith’s impact as a leader was felt both on and off the field.
Should Flores leave Minnesota, that possibility becomes even more interesting as to which way the Vikings’ defense turns. A double-edged sword in shoring up both players’ next moves. The organization now finds itself with an acute sense of urgency to get their plans in place before the offseason goes into overdrive.
Byron Murphy Jr. expressed his desire for Flores to remain with the organization, stating, “So he can’t go anywhere. He’s not allowed to go anywhere. No way. I know that everything happens for a reason, and it’s always God’s plan. I definitely do not want him to go anywhere.” His sentiments do a wonderful job of expressing a larger fear among teammates who all recognize the effect Flores has had on their productions and development.
With the offseason looming, conversations around both Flores and Smith are sure to heat up. The Vikings must weigh their options carefully to ensure continuity in their defensive strategy while addressing potential transitions in personnel.
