Tyler Shough Secures Fully Guaranteed Deal with New Orleans Saints

Tyler Shough of Texas Tech was a 2025 NFL Draft 40th overall pick. Even more so now that he’s signed a huge contract with the New Orleans Saints, a contract which happens to be fully guaranteed. This agreement really is historic and quite remarkable! Shough becomes the first second-round selection in the franchise’s 25-year history to sign this kind of contract. The Saints signed Shough a few days ago, just ahead of training camp starting at the Saints’ facility in Metairie, Louisiana. They further signed contracts with all nine of their draft picks during this span.

Shough’s contract has an interesting annual roster bonus structure. This structure allows for him to get the bulk of his money in the day after the first training camp that opens annually. What makes this financial arrangement so notable, though, is that it’s indicative of the new norm in 2nd round pick contracts. It makes him unique among all other non-first-round selections, who generally do not receive these types of guarantees.

The Saints are exhibiting big-time faith, not just by signing Shough at all, but by guaranteeing him fully from the start. He’s already primed to go toe to toe with Spencer Rattler for the starting QB spot. Fans and analysts alike are licking their chops at the prospect of this competition. Since then, Katherine Terrell has reported on the fascinating competitive thread to the very complicated Saints’ quarterback battle.

That makes Shough’s signing all the more significant. He’d be the only player taken last in the 2025 NFL Draft to land a fully guaranteed deal. This piece of his deal demonstrates how NFL contracts are evolving. Most importantly, it reveals the fortunes for players selected in the first three rounds of the draft. The Saints’ approach not only underscores their trust in Shough’s potential but sets a precedent for future second-round selections.

As training camp nears, there’s no doubt about it—Shough’s preparation will be put to the test. He’s driving to earn the respect and confirmation that he belongs on this team. In the meantime, the upcoming practices will provide Shough an opportunity to impress. He’ll find plenty of competition in Rattler, who is making his own play for the QB1 job.
