The New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks to come out of his NFL draft class. He has not campaigned publicly for the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Still, his recent performances are really starting to light a fire among players and media alike about the possibility of his candidacy. Shough’s most recent performance was a revelation, though—his sky-high potential on full display. He was 22 of 27 passing for a career-high 333 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Saints to an impressive come-from-behind win over the Tennessee Titans.
On Sunday, Shough went above and beyond turning the team’s fortune, orchestrating a brilliant comeback. The 34-26 victory was an important step in his rookie season’s breakthrough. His deftness early made at more positions into the key connections during pivotal times that were critical to the Saints’ success. Specifically, he connected with wide receiver Chris Olave for a 60-yard catch-and-run that showcased his deep ball potential. His 23-yard pass to tight end Juwan Johnson earlier in the game set up a huge score. This decision went a long way in establishing him as a leader on the field.
Shough’s performance has not gone unnoticed. That’s an amazing accomplishment! He joined only two other first-year players in NFL history to throw for at least 250 yards with zero picks in three straight games. This kind of consistency of play has certainly impressed both his teammates and football analysts across the board. After the game, Olave commented on Shough’s contributions, stating, “Oh yeah, it should be Tyler after this game. He went crazy today.”
Even for a first-year player, though, Shough has showed incredible maturity and ability. His ability to deliver in high-pressure situations mirrors the late-game heroics seen in previous Saints quarterbacks. And now their team is on fire with a four-game win streak! It’s the first time they’ve done this since Drew Brees led the Saints in 2020. This run has set up Shough as a major player in the still-nascent franchise return to consistent success.
Shough’s numbers from this past week’s matchup with the Titans highlight his presence. He conducted his business—achieving a passer rating above 120. No matter his statistics, his leadership was key in moving the offense down the field when it mattered most. Backfield mate Audric Estime was equally important, rushing for 32 yards and running the game-sealing 2-point conversion.
In his own words, Shough expressed confidence in his team’s capabilities: “We’re here for a reason, we’re going to go out there and operate.” This ethos has echoed through the entire locker room, creating an atmosphere of fight and purpose.
The new rookie quarterback’s impressive capacity to inspire his teammates was put on full display in the fourth quarter against the Titans. Similar to their previous matchup against the Carolina Panthers, where they executed two late scoring drives, Shough’s leadership proved invaluable. His teammates have noted that he consistently rises to the occasion, with one stating, “When the moment comes, you’ve got to make a play.”
And as conversations around postseason awards heat up, Shough’s performance will no doubt be in the spotlight. To date, his accomplishments have been monumental. In only eight starts, he’s already made five of them wins, hinting at what could be a star career in the NBA. For the second time in as many years, the Saints now enter the offseason eager to carry momentum forward and continue to build on their recent success.
