Tyler Loop Takes the Reins as Ravens’ New Kicker

The Baltimore Ravens have officially named Tyler Loop their new kicker, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first kicker drafted in the team’s 30-year history. Loop’s performances helped to solidify his position on Saturday night. He hit five of six FG attempts in that preseason tilt, tormenting his future opponents with howitzers from 51 and 53 yards.

In an otherwise forgettable contest, Loop shined, hitting his fifth field goal of the day from 53 yards out. His booming leg showed the special leg strength that won him the starting job. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh had high praise for Loop’s performance, stating that it was a “good night” for the rookie kicker. Loop showed consistency throughout his time with the Ravens, winning over coaches and teammates during spring workouts and training camp.

After being drafted in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, Loop was impressing everyone right out of the gate. He put it on display at practice. He shocked the crowd with a 60-yard field goal at M&T Bank Stadium, even impressing the coaching staff along the way. His preseason stats are pretty tidy to say the least. Loop was perfect on all six of his field goal tries, although he did misfire from 46 yards and 50 yards out.

The Ravens’ decision to cut previous kicker Justin Tucker came just nine days after Harbaugh’s announcement about Loop’s promotion. Tucker was suspended from the league for 10 weeks for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. This left the team with little time to quickly get a new kicker in place. To make room for Bahl, the Ravens released veteran placekicker John Hoyland on August 2. As it stands now, Tyler Loop is the only kicker remaining on the roster.

When speaking to reporters in Dallas following his selection as the Ravens’ kicker, Loop expressed his excitement, stating simply, “That’s fun.” His enthusiasm is a glimpse of what makes him so passionate about the game. It puts him in a position to replace one of the league’s most respected kickers – a wonderful opportunity should he choose to pursue it.
