Tyler Herro made a winning return to the Miami Heat on Wednesday night. He was instrumental, scoring 24 points and guiding the team to a dramatic 102-99 upset win against the Dallas Mavericks. After missing ten weeks due to an injury, Herro came back looking like a man possessed, scoring at will. He was integral to keeping the Heat’s early season energy going. His 29 points performance was his first game with such high output this season. Beyond that, it underscored his value to the team as a whole as they go for the best possible run in the ongoing campaign.
Herro, who averaged 23.9 points on 47% shooting last season and made his first All-Star team, struggled initially, missing his first four attempts. In the second quarter, he finally found his groove, getting his first basket on a drive to the lane. Starting with Hill’s triple after the rebound, that exciting young guard core went 9 for 9. He capped off the game with a staggering 12 successful attempts in 14 tries.
With under a minute remaining in game seven, the Miami Heat’s Bam Adebayo recorded one of the most important steals of his career. He facilitated Tyler Herro for a go-ahead floater that put the Heat ahead for good. The play took place with 48.2 seconds remaining on the game clock, capping off Herro’s return from injury.
“I happened to be in the right position, get to my spot and make a floater,” – Tyler Herro
It couldn’t have been better timing for the Heat to get Herro back, as they looked to maintain their hot start to the season. With all the uncertainty that surrounded Herro’s recovery, Head Coach Erik Spoelstra was pleasantly surprised by how easy Herro slid back into team dynamics. He stressed that Herro didn’t have to adapt to their style of play.
“He’s going to fit right in. He’s going to amplify everything we’re doing,” – Erik Spoelstra
Prior to returning to game action, Herro spent weeks gradually increasing his conditioning. This effort proved his determination to return to sword-swinging, monster-slaying prime. The Heat were shooting for his return by the end of this month. He was determined to do just that, and he showed it with a phenomenal showing against Dallas.
Adebayo pointed to the team’s selfless mentality this year, acknowledging how balanced the offense felt and how the players moved as one unit.
“As you see, it’s a fun offense to be part of. It’s not a lot of pick-and-rolls, but it’s sharing the game. Everyone feels involved, everyone gets a chance to be aggressive, and we’re being successful off of it,” – Bam Adebayo
The Heat’s victory against the Mavericks not only showcased Herro’s individual talent but demonstrated the team’s depth and ability to perform under pressure. Herro’s memorable efforts headed one of the biggest contributions a bench player has made in a thrilling back-and-forth battle with numerous lead changes.
