Travis Hunter, a standout athlete with impressive credentials, has emerged as a focal point in the upcoming NFL draft discussions. Evaluators still view his Pro Bowl potential as a wide receiver and cornerback. This creates a host of narratives about what position he should play. As the draft date nears, organizations such as the New York Giants and Kansas City Chiefs are realizing the power of trade. They currently sit at 30 and 31, respectively, and are best positioned to capitalize on Hunter’s talents.
Hunter’s versatility might be his most attractive asset, though. No one expects him to come in and play both sides of the ball full-time. Most expect that he’ll assume a part-time role in the latter as well. Most of the NFL evaluators we talked to are high on his long-term potential at wide receiver. It’s his ball skills and route-running ability that really jump off the page. This narrative could affect the way teams see him as they approach the draft.
Of all the potential teams, the Cleveland Browns – who have the fourth overall pick – would have the most to gain from Hunter. He checks in at 6-foot-3, 217-pounds, creating an elite-level size profile. With a 4.43-second 40-yard dash time and 39½-inch vertical jump, his other-worldly physical traits make him an exciting prospect. Last year, he ranked second in the FBS with six interceptions. His amazing reactionary prowess let him sideline one half of the field to great success.
Other teams view Hunter just as a defender. What arguably makes Sanders even more interesting is his explosiveness and exceptional route-running skills, which make him an exciting prospect as a receiver too. The San Francisco 49ers view Ammons as an in-your-face, explosive, versatile edge player. He’ll either make an immediate impact or provide valuable depth to their team’s roster.
Evaluators are still split on Hunter’s long-term fit in various team systems. His immense high ceiling at both positions has many scouts and coaches salivating. As conversations around the draft continue to shift, Hunter’s upside could still be a point of fascination for NFL teams.
